Saw this come in on the Salinas Californian wire service today:

Rebels Abduct Hundreds of Children

"Nepalese troops resumed their search Monday for hundreds of children taken hostage by Maoist insurgents in the mountains of western nepal, officials said.

The exact number of children taken by the rebels was unclear. On Sunday, soldiers recovered about 600 children taken from village schools on Friday in the remote Tahanu and Palpa districts. Hundreds more were being held and their whereabouts were unknown, officials said.

In the past, rebels have taken students for a few days to indoctrinate then with their revolutionary ideology, and then returned _most_ (emphasis mine) of them safely.

The rough terrain and remoteness of the area make rescue efforts difficult."

I really feel for these poor people. Imagine how crazy they must be about the safety of their children. It's amazing to me that after their idiotic ideology has imploded time and again all over the planet, that these lunatics still persist in trying to force their failed concepts on peaceful people. I'll bet every capitalistic advance the Nepalese people make drives them crazy.

As an aside, ask yourself how they could do this in an armed society. I can only assume that the average Nepalese adult is not allowed to own firearms. (?) Obviously, only the Maoists are armed. If they tried this in Israel or Switzerland or the US they would be cut down in about 5 seconds flat.

Norm

And for anybody wondering where Palpa or Tahanu are located:

(in the Western Region; Kathmandu is in the middle of the Central Region - labelled KTM)

Thanks,Dan - great maps. The map of the administrative regions is particularly helpful, because so many news stories refer to locations by region, and I've never been able to find them before.

I'm amazed the rebels are still alive. Taking children is a universal no no in any society or culture. The Rebels destroy their own cause.
