Does anyone know about or have experience with Katz knives - fixed blades in particular? I saw a pic of an intriguing 'hunter's companion' in a gun mag, and want to know more about this maker. Their web site is not quite up yet, so I haven't seen their full line. Does anyone have any of these, and what do you think of them?

Yo V: I used to own one of those Katz skinner, Lion King Series Military/Police model, very fine blade(XT80-SL steel). Skinner knives is not my fav. I prefer bowie but still, it's a good knive

Katz knives are very well made, but that XT80 is kind of hard to sharpen. Seems to hold an edge for a good while though. I dont really care for the style of that Hunter's companion though.

The hunter's companion didn't thrill me either, but it was the right size (5" blade) and the overall construction looked good. I also saw a fighter advertised in another mag, so I was thinking they might offer outdoor knives that don't have big skinning bellies and sawteeth. I also liked that they're in Scottsdale; since I'm in AZ I thought I might keep my purchase 'local'.

I handled the Lionking a couple times. VERY solid built fix blade, full tang, kraton handle. But the beauty part is when you actually hold the knife. It's very balanced and the handle is one of the most comfortable grip i've ever felt in a fix blade, it just feels natural in ur hands. I have no experience w/ its cutting power, but the one i played w/ was razor sharp, also very thick spine. If you can find a good price, i say go for it. Just my $.02.

Anyone figure out what the mysterious XT-70 and XT-80 steels are yet? (I'm guessing AUS-6 and AUS-8 for now).

If not, anyone want to send me their Katz knife(s) ... I have access to a Texas Nuclear Positive Material Identification tool at work and can get the lowdown precise skinny on what these mysterious steels are, totally non-destructive testing. I'll even send the knife back to you. Howzzat?

I dont know for sure what the analysis is, but its definitely not AUS6 or AUS8. Both of those steels are fairly easy to sharpen, XT80 is a lot harder to sharpen! I would guess it is more along the lines of 154CM or ATS34. Dont get me wrong, I like the XT80 steel and a blade that is hard to sharpen does not bother me. I have forged, marquenched L6 blades that are a bear to sharpen, but well worth it once an edge is one them. I dont mind spending time sharpening a good blade, I just pull out the DMTs and zone out while watching some TV.
