Hello I've been researching the katzbulger recently and can't find any specs on the point of ballance and distal taper or over all weight.
Being that it's supposed to be a cutting sword I would think the point of balance would be farther out along the blade and maybe lest tapered.
If anyone has any experience with this type of sword or a fairly accurate reproduction could you please send let me know if would greatly appreciate it .
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply.
I really like them too. For me I think it's the non "traditional" guard and that there seems to be a lot of difference in the blade profiles.
From flat to round and fairly acute tips.
Now if I could just find some specs to work from I'd really like to try and make one.

Excellent link above to an interesting sidearm. Seems many good points are discussed in that other thread.

Hello I've been researching the katzbulger

BTW its 'Katzbalger'

Possible explanation:
There are several different explanations about the origin of the name "Katzbalger": one is that it comes from the custom of carrying a sword without a scabbard, held only by a cat's skin (German word Katze means "cat", while Balg means the skin (fur) of an animal. Katzbalger means a piece made of a cat’s skin).

Another theory is that the word derives from balgen (brawling), and refers to intense, close-quarter combat like fights between feral cats. The most common translation is "cat-gutter", with an allusion to cat fight.

So it's a "cat-fight" sword? i like them even more now! :D

Based on what I've read and the art work of the time that I have seen I'm thinking it's probably cat-fighter.
Most of the artwork shows them carries in a scabbard (normally as brightly decorated as their clothing and hats.)
Does anyone one have any ideas as to the weights of originals. As a cutting sword I'm assuming the point of ballance is farther from the hard more like a "viking" sword than a latter arming sword more oriented to the thrust.
If there's any interest I'll do a wip thread when I start it might be helpful to have other eyes if I get stuck along the way.

Considering the variations of the style, you will find all types of specifications if doing an internet search for Katzbalger Review. As to originals, again, search forums such as myArmoury, Vikingsword and Sword Forum International.

Use katzbalger as a search term in a Google image search and follow the pages the images are on.

I wouldn't say you are basically looking for a blueprint but it seems like you haven't spent a whole lot of time looking for examples.

Thanks for the advice.
I did look through Google images and my armory.i just didn't find what I was looking for.i did search for them but I wasn't looking for a modern reproduction more like a historical example to draw from.
Most of the modern reproductions I see look like they have had a little bit to much artistic liberty taken with them.
Then again they may not judging from the various art works I very seen from the time or shortly after there seemed to be a huge variation in not just profile but geometry and decoration as well.
Thank for the help.

Well, I saw at least three very well done reviews based on historical examples and an extensive thread of originals on Vikingsword.com, so I have to figure you may not be searching very efficiently.

I'll agree that the form is less discussed than a lot of other forms but there is still a wealth of information out there.
