I'm headed to Princeville Kauai,HI on Feb 4-11 and wonder if any of you HOGs or Piglets have a list of must see, must do while there.
This will be my first visit to HI and I'm open to any and all suggestions including best places to "pig out"/eat.

Kauai is my favorite place. I stayed in Princeville also...very nice:) I would buy "The Ultimate Kauai GuideBook" by Andrew Doughty, ahead of time. It will be fun to read on the plane:thumbup:

Without it you will miss the cool stuff. I enjoyed Ke'e beach on the North shore. It may be the most beautiful beach in the world. From the beach you can hike the Na Pali coastline, and see waterfalls and lagoons:cool::thumbup:

Most of the cool beaches are accessed through the jungle like terrain. Coconuts should have good drinking milk at that time, so bring a chopper:D:thumbup: Pina Coladas were so good with the fresh coconut milk.;)

Try the rambutan fruit too:thumbup:

On the South shore, JoJo's shave ice is a Must try and well worth the wait.

There is alot more, I could go on for days.

Oh yeah Try the Huli Huli chicken from the side of the road, just before Princeville. I loved it and ate it almost every day:cool::thumbup: It wasn't in the book either. We just stopped, and people would get out of their car and run to get the last chicken. They sell out early every day.

Have fun,
Al

Wow, that should be so much fun! I have always wanted to go to HI... Have fun!!

Kauai, my favorite place in the world!! My daughter and I have the Kalalau Trail hike on our bucket list. Haven't done it, but it is on our list. Also must see the lighthouse near Princeville. Lots of neat birds and we have seen the Monk seals basking on the rocks a few times there. Ke'e beach as mentioned above, and also you have to catch a sunset at Polihale beach, near Barking Sands. It is a pain to get to, lots of dirt roads, but there have not been more than a handfull of people there on about 15 miles of beach. No lifeguards, but absolutely stunning sunsets.

Polihale beach and Napali coast, notice all the people!!!

Also my favorite restaraunt in Kauai is Wahoo's. They have WONDERFUL Poke salad (local Hawaiian tuna dish).

Take your time, cruise the little shops. Also you have to drive into the interior of the island and see the Waimaea (sp?) canyon. Absolutely breath taking.

Oops, as long as you are there, catch one of the cruises on a catamaran to see the napali coast!!!

Ok, you get the idea.....my favorite place!! Will add some pictures if I can get them uploaded :-)

Grew up there (Kilauea..near Princeville and Hanalei) and would be happy to answer any questions that you have...;)

You've already got some great suggestions above. We stayed at the Princeville Resort, it was peaceful and beautiful, if expensive. Try to do the Napali coast by boat or kayak, it's spectacular. We snorkeled all over the island, using the book Snorkel Kauai, saw all kinds of fish and turtles. Have a great time!

If you like to hike, continue past Princeville and Hanalei bay to the end of the road (it's a nice drive in and of itself). The Kalalau Trail begins (or ends there if you hike the Na Pali coast in one direction or the other). Hike in about two miles to the Hanakapiai beach then head inland along the stream about another 1.8 miles to the falls and a nice swimming pool below the falls. It's a bit of work, and mind the weather. Rain can fill the stream quickly and if it's hot bring plenty of water. I'm sure you can find some good descriptions in the guide books. Mike

My wife & I went to Kauai for our honeymoon. If I had gone to Hawaii out of college, I wouldn't have come back!! Plenty of great tips already, but here are my 2 cents:

Whatever else you do, do not miss the sunset at Ke'e Beach! See it at least once.

Don't miss the Na Pali coast either... helicopter, hike, boat, whatever. Just see it. We took a charter boat (Holo Holo) out of Hanapepe Bay.

Last 2 things: even though you're all the way up at Princeville, get around to the southwest side of the island. See Waiemea Canyon. And go all the way to the end of the road in Kokee park. Pass the 1st Kalalau lookout and go to the second one. The view is ridiculous. You can see the Kalalau Valley and the ocean on one side and back towards the canyon on the other. It's like standing on a mini continental divide.

I absolutely loved it and am dying to go back. Enjoy!

You're killin me man! I can only imagine.

We spent a week there in 2009, loved it....despite the rain and feral chickens.... !!! Some of the most beautiful places on earth no doubt... :)

Kauai is not huge, so if you are near Poipu/Koloa on the south side, try the Beach House Restaurant:
http://www.the-beach-house.com/home.html
They have great food and beautiful sunsets (be sure to get a reservation).

Waimea Canyon is an amazing place to see. On the way to/from there, if you like Italian food then try the Pomodoro Ristorante - it's a small place but the food is really good:

Have a great time!

Gotta go someday, my wife went to BYU Hawaii and talks about it a bunch.
We will get there someday.

got to go make more sheaths :)

Only a few more days leftbefore the trip to Kauai.
Anyone got any last minute ideas or any HOG's or piglets on the island?

I have a picture of myself on top of Wailua Falls (pictured above in DocGP's post) from about fifteen years ago. You have to jump a fence that says "no trespassing" to access it from the parking/viewing area. I got my butt chewed from a distance by the locals saying that I was going to fall and kill myself and ruin it for everyone else. We had a great time, I'll never forget it.
