Hi Daniel,

I just got my K-tusk (long story) and I must say i`m impressed, very nice blade, wonderful handle, great wood, truly a great knife, I mean it.

Regarding the kauri, i am not sure if it can or should me oiled, or well how should I maintain it? I have no idea how to treat fossilized wood.

Saludos,

Alejandro

Two things - first, it's not fossilized, just normal wood that has been burried in the ground for a long time. Petrified wood has had the wood replace by minerals (mostly silica) and is a rock in a wood shape. The ancient woods website says that their kauri accepts normal wood finishing techniques. Second, Dan has his kauri stabilized, so the wood is filled up with resins of some sort.

Since the wood is stabillized, you don't need to do much. Oil probably won't penetrate too far. A light coat of paste wax would probably be best. I believe Dan uses briwax. Honestly, I haven't done anything to the handle of my kauri Nessie since I got it.

Tohatchi NM hit the nail on the head.

I give it a mineral oil bath once or twice a year....and/or coat with wax....that'll keep it stable.
