When I got back in town this afternoon I called Ray Laconico to see if he was interested in taking his dog Bear for a walk. Of course he was, so we went to Kaweah Reservoir east of Visalia. Kaweah Reservoir is used exclusively for irrigation in the summer, so they run it all the way down by fall. And since we haven't had any significant precipitation yet this winter, the water was very low and we were able to walk around on the bed of the upper part of the reservoir. When we got there, this is where we started:

There are huge areas covered by burrs, if you walk through this you will be covered with them

We eventually got to where the Kaweah River enters the reservoir, and Bear decided that it was time to get in the water

That was a fun little walk. Bear had a great time and it was good for him to get out. His paws are sore, probably from those prickly things.

Thanks William! He will be 13 yrs. old in March. I've had him since he was small enough to carry in one hand.

Hey John you got good eye for pics as always. I always enjoy your pics as they always bring out the best of where you are.. Ray there is something missing in all those pics with bear.. Oh yeaaa he needs his girl friend...

Man! I live a few hours north of Visalia I gotta make it up to Kings Canyon for some hiking one of these days.

The Kings Canyon (and Sequoia) backcountry offers scenery that is far better than Yosemite. The only difference is that you have to walk a ways to get to the good parts unless you start at trailheads from Owens Valley on the east side.

I've driven past that spot several times but never stopped. That area definitely gets a lot of water in a good year.
