Hello!

I bought myself a fishing Kayak and need a paddle, but not just any paddle, I want two defensive blades at the tip of each paddle blade.

It sounds silly, I know. And some will say it's probably dangerous, which is may be. But at the end of the day, makos, hammer heads, tigers and gators are in the areas I'm fishing in. I can't say I'll ever be in the mood to be continually bumped by any of these predators on their turf where they have a sharp advantage.

Enter this forum. I am going to ask the paddle maker to include two blades. I don't want them to be constructed of carbon fiber. I think titanium would be better.

I will also use these blades to push off of stuff.

So, knife makers, is anyone willing to help me with this? In my minds eye, I think of a long shank to spread the force out into the paddle blad itself. I'm also thinking of something like a flattened/angular chickenwing elbow. The blade will only be about two inches along the edge of the paddle edge and 1/4 inch out. I'd also like a spike about 1 inch long from one edge. Not really enough length to kill these animals, but plenty to get their attention that this fish ain't food. No idea how to upload a picture.....

Any thoughts?

I used to do alot of canoeing and kayaking but in cold water like Ellesmere island. We didn't have any sharks to worry about but I have been attacked by walrus and they can scare polar bears. We always take a shotgun, two barrels, loaded. I imagine sharks are pretty tough too. If i were going to use a knife, desperation move, I would want something more substantial and faster deploying than anything in or on the paddle that wouldn't screw up my paddling.
Having said that, a long titanium blade could be stored in a hollow paddle, maybe two for balance, but then to use the blade you couldn't use the paddle.
Not so practical, but very cool.

Ask Mecha. He's Mr. Titanium.

I have a Spartan V14 that I keep on my chest rig and either it or my Yarborough will be on my vest while on the water too, along with my sidearm.

However, I still would like to have something to use as a push of device and a little poker to help convince whichever predator circling me I am not food.

Bad idea to put blades on paddle

especially if you are pushing off things

Strap a pole spear to your kayak or a bang stick and carry a good knife

paddles are for paddling

pole spears and bang sticks are for poking toothy critters

ps I know some things about poking fish with pointy objects

BAJA lots of big sharks great white breeding ground

70 miles off shore 1000 ft of water shooting dorado .... lots of blood and commotion and again lotsa sharks

In above pics I’m carrying a spear gun

here is a pic of a very pole spear taken down for travel

Bad idea.
1. Shark skin is pretty tough. Ask anyone who tried to poke at one.
2. Any shark that would bother you on your kayak is more likely to see what your paddle is made of. See pics of surfboards with bites in them.
3. Once you get your paddle chomped, have fun paddling back with your new stick.

Shark protection? bang stick

This should work for those pesky sharks.

On a serious note... bad idea. I have dove with tigers, hammerheads (don’t worry) and oceanic whitetips and wouldn’t dream of trying to fight them off with a double bladed kayak paddle sword. I did carry a PVC pipe with me when I was offshore with the oceanic whitetips to jab them in the nose if needed.

Bad idea. As someone who used to sell, rig, and use kayaks for ocean fishing, your plan is really poorly thought out. Why not have a deterrent that isn’t something you need, like your paddle?
You know what would also be great, chainsaws on the end of each paddle. You could probably get some custom made out of titanium...

I remember Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock fighting gladiator style with some sort of paddle blade jobbies.

Get two of them and have Mecha fashion them into a badass paddle weapon. Boldly go where no man has paddled before!

Seriously though, bang stick. They are very safe, very effective and very easy to carry.

Where are you fishing that has alligators and sharks in the same water? I would probably reconsider if you are worried about getting attacked. When I lived in New Orleans I would kayak Bayou Segnette regularly and there are tons of gators there. They will watch you but I have never been messed with by one. They could see I was ten foot long and ten foot wide and had several of us, so they stayed away.

.....that is indeed not just silly it is really mean....
You hunt, fish or watch...but stabbing and poking at wild life ?....
.....

Some of these are funny, but I think some of you may have missed the point. I'm not much into explaining myself to people, but I've got a minute.

I carry my sidearm. I will use it to save life and limb from a wild animal. But I am not trying to indiscriminately kill a shark or gator for being too close. Poking a shark or a gator with a 1 inch or so spike isnt going to inflict grevious bodily harm, and the likihood of an resulting infection is low. Additionally, the shape is nor like a cone v a ice pick. Again I'm not attempting to kill an animal via sepsis. Now, it will cause discomfort but is less dangerous than many other sea creatures capable of defending itself against such animals.

I think where a lot of you are getting your thought skewed is by misunderstanding what I described and possibly thinking I am adding an actual knife to my paddle. That is wrong.

Im not taking a bang stick. I am not trying to kill these animals. If I were, I already have my sidearm. Maybe you missed that. The point here is to deter these animals from continued aggressions (and to push off rocks etc). Not to kill them...

LOL to the person that said where could I possibly Kayak where gators and sharks can be side by side. I never said at the same time. Sorry you read into that. Kayaks are pretty versitile though. You can use them basically anywhere with water. And a lot of estuaries here lead to fresh water from salt water. So seeing a shark AND a gator in one outtting isn't out of the question. But going along with what you said, two words - bull shark. The regularly swim up into gator territory and gators occasionally go down to shark territory. Google flamingo FL. Educate yourself.

A kayak paddle sword does sound cool though.

I get a kick out of you guys (the ones that offered literally no help and just like to talk). I also very much appreciate the helpful comments. I'm glad I got in touch with Mecha. He and I are figuring out how to get this to work.

Thanks guys. This has been an interesting thread.

I can’t wait to see a sketch. In the meantime though, I’ll be watching Free Willy.

You ever been smacked with a paddle? It's an uncomfortable experience without any knife-paddle-swords...
