I decorating the tandem kayak I salvaged from the bottom of a marsh. I ended up cleaning and sanding it to remove some of the nastiness, plus a lot of soap and water to remove the smell of cat pee and rotten eggs from the mud and possibly animal urine. Then I used printable water slide decals from Hobby Lobby to put the picture on. In hindsight, I wished I'd primed the surface with a bit of white to make the image pop more but I'm happy with the results regardless. Anyone a fan of the Borderlands games... or pirates?
I ruined about four of these before I got it right. I started by sanding the surface to remove any major scratches, I went to 800 grit sandpaper where the decal was going to go. Then I took my printed decal and gave a good three coats of clear coat to seal the ink. I slid the decal on and flattened out the bubbles then used Non-acetone nail polish remover to dissolve the decal, then let it be for a day. Next, I used Krylon clear coat to fix the decal, I sprayed it about 10 times waiting 5 hours in between coats. Once it was done I coated the entire boat twice. Holding up pretty well so far.
