I'm considering the whitewater Emerson Lagriffe variant for paddling needs. How suitable is that little blade? Is it corrosion-resistant enough? How do I attach it to my PFD properly? Can it be wrapped with paracord for even more grip? Can it be deployed rapidly by instinct if I'm in a tumble?

What other knives would be better/should I consider? I'm thinking of a custom as well - any suggestions on design, makers? how much do they charge as well?

thanks,
Spyken

If you do a search, you'll see there has been quite a bit of discussion of this. I had neil Blackwood make me a custom stellite knife for my kayaking and camoeing use, and at least one other forumite did the same witha slightly different custom design [I like serrations on one edge, for example]. Neil's standard knives are also excellent and I used one in this role before he built my custom, and that one is talonite. You can lash it to your PFD in several different ways, and that has been discussed too. New ideas and impressions are always appreciated, though.

HJK, could you post a picture of your knife and set-up? thanks - sorry, I forgot about the search function momentarily. If I remember, the spydie harpy, rescue, benchmade, gerber shorty and your stellite knife have been mentioned before (although I've never seen a pic) - just wondering whether lagriffe has been used.

I will do a search meanwhile.

cheers,
Spyken

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera. As to the knife, Neil may have a photo. As to my setup, it's pretty standard. I have it lashed inverted to one of the left lash points on my PFD , when i wear a pfd.
