KBAC-27D VFD that doesn't work, what to do with it? (Already have a new one)

I'll explain what happened.. the shop was getting moved around and my father was re wiring the 220 to the VFD and it was hot and wires touched and ZAP! Now the VFD does not work. I bought a new one and wired it in, so my grinder and motor are fine etc. I've since added a circuit breaker in line, to prevent future such issues.

But now I'm left with a very nice NEMA-4X - IP-65 KBAC-27D for a 2 horse 3 phase motor. Originally I was calling around to local suppliers in hopes of getting it repaired, but they basically said it would be cheaper to buy a new one. I looked at the PCB inside and studied it closely and can find no burned spots.. there is no fuse that can be seen (perhaps on the back side, but I don't believe so).

Do you think this is worth trying to salvage or sell "as is", or should I just toss it out?

Can't help with anything real usefull for advice but if you end up just wanting to trash it you can toss it my way :) I'd give a amature shot at troubleshooting it since I am searching and saving for one now.

I'd try to return it for company service.

At the most it should cost you shipping it to them to find out if or what the costs are to repair.

If it was a fully enclosed and set up unit, there was a fuse somewhere. Check it over again.

To trace the problem, clip a 9V battery's posative output onto an incomming power terminal. Conect the negative to your meter a,d use the probe to follow the wires. Hopefully, you will quickly find the place where the cuircuit is open. Also, check the power resister that determines the HP rating. It is a larger ceramic rectangle with a bunch of writing.

If you haven't already done it, download the schematic for your unit to aid in the search for fuses, and tracing of the power path.

I'm not sure about the 27D, but my 240D has a fuse in it (20A round white fuse). When you open the front box, it sits a little bit to the left of center and down a bit. I would start checking there. If that isn't the issue, I would probably send it to KB and ask them to test it, and get a quote on how much it is going to cost to repair it, before scrapping it.

Hm I posted a reply but evidently it didn't work..

The first thing I did was contact KB and they fairly refused to talk to me, and had me call a distributor.. so I looked around and called one, and they suggested I call KB and so it went. I forget who finally answered that it would cost as much to fix as to replace, and that they weren't really interested in fixing something so "small", and were more concerned with high dollar corporate customers, so I just replaced it. Plus their price was half what the place I bought the grinder at wanted.

Anyway, I will check again for a fuse. The manual states to put your own fuse inline, and of course I didn't see that when I first read it (which is why I added the breaker after one blew).. What I haven't done is take the circuit board out and check the back side of it yet, so I will do that when I get time.

Thank you Stacy for the tips on tracing the problem down, I would not have thought of that. I am good with computers but their base electronics I know fairly little about.
