I am nearly complete with my KMG clone project. I have access to a few different 3 phase motors from work.

this one: 2 HP

http://www.baldor.com/products/deta...ralPurpose&winding=35WG0872&rating=40CMB-CONT

or this one: 3 HP

http://www.baldor.com/products/deta...ralPurpose&winding=35WGT098&rating=40CMB-CONT

My question is what is the maximum horsepower the KBAC 27D frequency drive will safely handle? Will this model VFD work for either of these motors?

Also which of these 2 motors would be the better choice for a belt grinder.

Thanks
Brian

The manual

page4
"Note: Rated for 2 HP maximum with single-phase (220v) AC line input "

Both those you have linked are 3 hp motors.

The difference is 1700 vs 3400 rpm
In a KMG the speed doesn't matter, you can set it up with a pulley to be the same.
Get whatever is cheaper for you.

The other difference I see is in mounting.
In a KMG, get a motor with a baseplate.

(In a GIB , or ERRE get a motor with face mount bolts.)

The KBAC 27D will only handle UP TO a 2hp motor. It will not work with the 3hp motor....at least not more than a couple of seconds before the burns up the motor...or the VFD!

You can get VFDs for 3hp and higher, but once you get past the 2 hp mark they start getting very spendy.

From the information in your post, I would say the 2hp motor is what you want to go with.
The best deals I have found on motors and VFDs are from Wayne Coe:

Thank you fellas! It does look like Wayne has the best prices that I have seen so far.

Paying the list $750 for a motor is criminal.

Try the free online ads like crag list or Kijiji
You can get New Old Stock for much less

$85 for 1.5 hp seems common here.

Ed, are you sure about this? I have previously read that a lower powered vfd will run a motor but only provide the lower power output.
