A friend of mine wants his personal Marine Corps KBAR restored and he wants me to do it. I have told him that if he is expecting professional results he should take the knife to a professional. After days and days of trying to convince him otherwise, he still wants me to give it a go. The edge is damaged and dull. The guard is bent on one side so that it is "L" shaped. The handle is black stacked leather. All metal components are heavily patinated. Does anyone know how to dismantle a KBAR. The work I am planning on this knife is to straighten the guard, polish all metal components and resharpen the blade. After polishing the metal components I'll probably blue them. I would love any feedback.

The closest thing to it that I have ever dismantled was a USN Mk II. As far as I know, the construction should be the same on the K-Bar. There is a cross pin that goes clear through the buttcap and tang which you have to find and drill (it is peened in place) to free it up. It can then be drifted out with a punch. After it is removed, the rest should slide off the tang relatively easily. The hardest part for me was getting the stacked leather washers compressed enough to get the buttcap back on, but I was also replacing a bunch of the leather on mine.
