I always carry two knives, one to use for everyday cutting tasks and one that I will only use if I have to protect myself. the knife I currently carry for cutting stuff is a BM griptilian and the one that i carry for SD is the AFCK2. I also sometimes carry a spiderco matirarch for SD. I just think that its important to have a SD knife as sharp as posible. example; if your attacker is wearing thick clothing such as leather or many layers. I would want my slashes to go right through like butter. I am sure that a properly sharpend AFCK2 could do this with out a problem. As far as a stabbing attack most knives should be able to handle this edge or no edge. I just wouldn't want to be limited to stabbing in a life or death situation. Leave nothing to chance I guess. What do you guys think?

Incapacitation tends to be in the stabs. Stabs reach the vital organs and the major blood vessels... Slashes are more like distractions.

Yes, always carry a back up knife for SD only. A sharp knife is indeed better in a fight.

As for cut vs thrust(slash vs stab), either one ,if done right, will kill, if done half-@$$ed, with cripple/disfigure, and if done totally wrong, well the ER can stitch you back up.

The key is practise. A good stab is the same as a good slash. The trick is stabs are easier to learn and improvize compared to slashes. MOST people without training will only slash with the first half inch or so of their knife (personal conclusion). They under-commit these attacks. With a stab, however, they go deeper, often to the hilt. The mistake they made was Over-committing, but it was a mistake in their favor. Some argue that a mistake in your favor was not a mistake. I believe that luck should never be confused with skill.

Train hard and train well. You need good reflexes, good aim and proper responce. Not too deep (stuch knife), not too shallow(no kill), not too committed (slow recovery/open to counter attack), not un-committed (no kill).

I would subscribe to the two knife theory. One for every day puttering and one freshly sharpened for emergencey uses of all types.

I have to disagree. The way you train is the way you fight. I told a training buddy once that if I was in a fight with a guy who had a knife, I'd rather have a stick. He thought I was nuts! But at that point, I had very very little blade training, and a fair amount of stick training. I was comfortable with the stick, could judge its range, and get some good, hard and fast stroked with it. I would have done better in a fight with that stick, because ti was a part of me.

Now you take your EEC utility knife. You use it every day! It is comfortable to use, you know where it is instinctively, etc. If the crap hit the fan, I bet you'd be reaching for your "utility" knife, simply because it is so programmed into you. I carry an AFCK and use it for EDC chores. I know well how it feels, how it moves, I can feel the length of the blade (i.e. I know the reach), and so on. This is because I have "trained" with it every day! Trained by cutting up food, opening packages, slicing rope. etc.

In addition, if your EDC is so dull that it can't cut a bad guy, you should sharpen it. My AFCK gets sahrpened when it starts to scrape hair. That is plenty sharp for bad guy slashing.

Even if you train with your dedicated fighter, you still won't be as good as you would be with your EDC, simply because you train with it all the time. Fumble with your dedicated fighter and you'll get bit by my utility knife!

Knife Fighting Techniques from Folsom Prison...

Paladin Press publishes it.

It has a few eye-opening fighting concepts in there. I don't want to say techniques because it doesn't really teach you how it fight, but it does point you in a certain direction.

As a defender, distance is your friend, so a club is a better weapon...

If you're an attacker, proximity and surprise is your friend.

Hmmm...I wouldn't call a slash to the neck a distraction.

given a choice between stab or slash, given equal chance of successful contact, a stab (again) reaches deeper.

Slash all you want, I'll use the stab and twist.

I hear you, will22. Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch are built on the principle that they are NEVER to be used for cutting, so that they can be used that one time they are truly needed. The thing is, the knife you have on you is the one you will use. And I always have a folder for utility use on me. So that would be my SD tool. But I think the best soultion is what I do anyway. KEEP ALL MY BLADES SHARP ALL THE TIME. :D If you worked constuction and really tore up your knife daily or didn't know how to sharpen it yourself, then I could see going through the trouble of carrying a seperate SD knife.
