So, I had a beautiful Fontinelle Pataud 9cm knife that I lost the other day. It the smaller, 9cm kind. I think it is worth about $174. I always kept it in my pocket in a black leather pouch. Yesterday, I realized it was gone. I am still holding out hope that it is kicking around my house somewhere. But my gut tells me it slipped out of my pocket at some point.

I am going to replace this one ASAP. I can't live without it. It was my go-to knife.

So, what do you guys to keep your knives safe and sound in your pocket?

I honestly don't do anything special. I clip the knife to my pocket and go. My more traditional slip joint goes into the bottom of my pocket. There are a ton of variables here:
Type of pants, specifically the cut of the pocket
Handle material (slippery vs textured
Type of knife
Clip or no clip
Size of knife large or small

You might also try and put a smaller knife on your keys.

Sounds like you need a knife with a pocket clip. Ive never lost one, but i clip my knives to my backpack, pants, shirt pocket, etc.

Pocket clips work.

I've had good results by giving knives to my wife, that way she can loose them for me. It saves me from suffering the grief of loosing a nice knife.

You might want to get a pair of pants with the small coin pocket at the bottom of the main front right pocket. banana republic sells that style on their Gavin Chinos.

Narrow the your using knife locations down to three places. Your pocket, Your hand and one other place when it is not in your pocket or your hand. In my case there is a tray in a drawer that a friend gave me at home where my users rest when they are not on me. ;). When I want to switch or get another knife I go to the tray.

I have never had a pocket knife slip out of my pocket. My dad did once when he hung his pants up and it fell out of his pants into a seldom worn shoe in his closet. He found it with his toe a year later. ;) So check where you changed or stored the pants/jeans.

Pocket clips work.

Sometimes.

I found my Spyderco that jumped ship on the driveway.

And the Umnumzaan as big as it is has threatened to leave my pocket at times.

Costco sells a variety of Nautica pants with that feature also and I really like the small coin pocket option.

Maybe try a small belt sheath, a pouch style one that has a fold over snap top. Or some sort of small pouch with a zipper that can go on your belt. When I ride my motorcycle, everything goes into pockets with zippers. You could also try sewing the corners of your pocket, just enough to make it difficult for stuff to slip out when you sit down.

bluemoon, do this; drop the knife in your pocket. Then shake out a bandana. Any regular bandana will do. Then wad it up loosely and stuff it in your pocket on top of your knife. This is what we did in the old days and I've never lost a pocket knife. My dad carried the same Case peanut for forty years and never lost it. The bandana trick is what I learned from him when I was a little kid. Besides, a bandana comes in handy now and then. Try it, and never loose another pocket knife.:thumb up:

I use a monkeyfist lanyard to hang my knives/knife pocket sheaths inside my front or back pocket with the ball end of the lanyard tucked under my belt. Not only are they secured, but having them hang in the pocket makes them seem weightless and they don't sink down to the bottom with the coin change or comb or whatever which I can more easily access with the knife out of the way. Just a firm tug on the knife frees it. Good Luck and I hope you find your knife after all!

(If you knife doesn't have a ring or lanyard hole, you can always punch one in its sheath. I've also used a leather drawstring pouch with the long drawstring tucked under or tied to my belt/belt loop)

Boy it's a hollow feeling when you reach for something that should be in your pocket and it isn't there.

It doesn't help much, but I've come to the conclusion that anything I cary in my pocket is a temporary possession. Eventually I'll loose it. Clip knives work pretty well, but I've lost plenty of those, too.

Wrapping a rubber band around a knife can help...makes it harder for the knife to just slip out when you sit down. It also makes it harder to use the knife.

Probably the most secure solution, if you can put up with it, is a small pouch you wear around your neck. Kept light a neck pouch isn't too annoying, though there is a fashion penalty to be paid.

Vest pockets are also more secure because they don't "dump" when you sit down. Or zippered pockets, but in reality changing your wardrobe to accommodate what you cary in your pockets isn't practical or even economical for most people.

All possessions are fleeting, as they say.

BTW Check the girlfriend's sofa, those things are like the Bermuda Triangle of pocket knives, jus sayin. :D

I like that....great idea.

I am still holding out hope that it will turn up...but I've check everywhere...house, car, hamper, sofa...

Man, I loved that knife. I just hope that the person who finds it will appreciate it!!

My solution was a traditional knife with a bail connected to a P-7 clip. As an added bonus it doesn't print in work slacks as a knife since it hangs vertically. Otherwise I had my kid make a few duct tape slip cases and those worked pretty good. Ultimately, habit will win the day so the idea that the knife is only ever in one of three places is real good too.

There is a lot of great advice here! But it wouldn't be Bladeforums if there wasn't:thumbup:.

I carry all my big folders via a deepcarry pocket clip, and I usually take the clip off to shorten then rebend and get it a hair tighter so I don't have to worry. And I am constantly feeling for that knife all day long to make sure it is still there. Sorta' like some folks have to feel if their "junk" is all there, I have to feel if my knife is all there!!

I drop my slipjoint into my other front pocket, and it ends up at the bottom of that pocket. Never lost a knife and at 56 I'm gonna' say that is good!

Hello, my name's Bob and I'm a chronic knife loser.

To solve this problem, I don't carry anything without a lanyard.

At 6'10" in a world of 5'8" people, I have the annoying habit of loosing Vics (and change, and a cell phone, and keys,...) when I sit down in a too-short chair and my knees end up higher than they should, thus pointing my pockets slightly down. I've found every one of those knives though I did lose a Microstream in a cab in San Francisco when visiting my brother.
I only carry knives in a front pocket about half of the time. Larger knives with clips usually clip to my belt at around 4-5 o'clock or in my back pocket (especially if that pocket has a button flap). I've also carried them in my right cargo pocket near the front of it, between the edge and the first velcro.
I usually attach Vics to a Microstream (larger overall then and harder to lose) or hang it on my key carabiner on my belt (NOT on a belt loop)
