Keep the handle out of the ribs idea.

With larger knives, I hate having a buttcap or end of the handle jabbing my ribs when I sit down. I figured I'd try my hand at doing somthing about it, and so I made a swivel attachment for a few sheaths I just finished. It is tight enough that it doesn't flop around, but easy enough to adjust when sitting. Sort of looks unweildly in the pics, but is quite comfy to wear and fair easy to make. Here is a view of the top inside the sheath, where you can see how I placed the female side of a Chicago screw.

Here is a side view of the top of the sheath. Sheath, leather spacer, kydex belt loop.

I saw a really neat idea for a swivel and attachment in a flashlight forum. The guy machined a brass button that fits into the clips you buy for cell phone. Of course his button attached to a flashlight, but it would work for a knife too. just make a little button that attaches to the sheath.

As long as the knife is not too heavy, it would work good. When the clip wears out, you just chuck it and buy another for $4. The clips are pretty tough (at least Nokia branded ones). I always break the plastic buttons before I break the clips. They tend to last me about 6 months and your talking in and out at least 20 times a day.

Good idea Clint, I may have to steal it. Geez if you had a milling machine, those slots in the beltloop would be a piece of cake, eh?

Respectfully,

Hugh

Clint, Congratulations for a very clever idea and fine execution. I especially like that you've still got the built-in leather belt loop for backup if the swivel belt loop ever breaks. I immediately archived the pics for future inspiration. ;)

IMHO plenty of knives (especially bigger ones) would benefit from being housed in a swinger/swivel type sheath. I don't know why more sheathmakers don't produce them.

Clint---nice job, my friend! Would it be too much effort to post it in the sheath gallery of the sheath forum on CKD? Sandy

Thanks for the positive comments, all. Hugh, You don't miss a beat on the mill comments, do you?!!! I don't think you actually have one, you just like to pretend so that everyone thinks your actually a knifemaker!

Xero, the cellphone clip sounds like a good one. Anyone else ever tried it, and have a pic?

Sandy, sure I'd post it on CDK, but I only have a basic membership so don't think I'm allowed to post pics there. If you can, you welcome to do so.

Found a picture of the homemade swivel the guy made for his flashlight. Thought it would be a cool idea for a knife sheath.

Clint, I think its a pretty neat idea and it does give me a few thoughts too. I was wondering - there is a shot of the inside of the sheath and the hole for the Chicago screw extends to inside the sheath. Would this make it prone to scratching the knife handle if it pressed hard enough against the back of the sheath ? I was thinking that you'd only need the hole in the belt loop to secure the screw, but maybe I have it wrongly figured out...

Clint, is that knife the same one you made for yourself "years ago", that you are happily displaying in a Blade magazine "Knives the Readers Carry" section from a couple of years back ? Jason.
