Literally!

I have been experimenting with my "Food Saver" vacuum sealer and came up with a neat idea. I individually seal several Stormproof matches and a striker, creating a waterproof fire source that weighs almost nothing.

I have packed these in various parka and vest pockets for years. I especially like putting them in those rarely used pockets on sleeves.

It occurred to me that when I am in the woods I typically have on some kind of hat. There is usually a little space between the top of my head and the top of the hat and I thought that it might be usable. I took two small safety pins and pinned a matchpack to the liner of the crown of my rain hat, careful not to puncture the hat or the matchpack.

So now if I get separated from my pack, but somehow manage to retain my hat, I've got matches. This idea can be extended by including some tinder and by taping a scalpel blade to the underside of the mmatchpack in case you've lost your knife.

Man, thats really neat. Good tip.

very cool idea... i like it....

john mccann, the author of "building the perfect survival kit", does something similar.....

Very clever! I like it!

How 'bout sealing the scalpel blade into the matchpack too?!? ;)

Neat idea. would that new glad wrap that binds to itself be any good for this? I don't have a vacume sealer.

That's a great idea but be very, very careful about putting small blades in descrete places for emergency use. It's a fine idea until you forget you put one there and a year or so later walk through airport security. Trust me on this one... Mac

Thanks guys.

Marcinek, the material that the Food Saver uses is pretty thick. I suggested the scalpel blade taped to the outside so that you could get to it to open the match pack.

Liam, I doubt that "Glad Wrap" or anything of the kind would be sufficiently waterproof. You could always use a small zip-lok bag or one of those little "dry sacks" they sell.

I originally was going to use Velcro to attach it to the hat, but as fate would have it, I couldn't find the fuzzy side in my junk drawer.

LUCY, YOU GOT SOME 'SPLAININ' TO DO!

And telling them you are into survival techniques just makes them crazier, right? It's STRIP SEARCH TIME! "Huh? Bend over and WHAT?"

I know, FLIX, hence the "wink."

Again, simple and great idea! There seem to be a ton of things that could be waterproofed with it.

I like this a lot. I would add a row of tinder. In fact, I wonder how well the plastic bag burns. Someone on another thread experimented with petroleum jelly and cotton balls in duct tape. The vacuum seal bag is a natural for that I think.

I could see laying out several rows of smaller (and annoying) items we like to put in kits --like fish hooks--- that would package well this way. First aid items like larger compresses that would only be used for major trauma would compact with the vacuum and be kept neat and uncontaminated.

I think DaleW is on to something. How about the putting some kind of back up clothing in the foodsaver bag? It would be compressed (Like those SpaceBags) and stay dry.

 on the clothing. Individual pairs of socks... gloves... snacks... maps/survival guide... pretty much anything. Put them in larger ziplocks for resealability (is that a word?) and you'd be all set.

I think my girlfriend will be getting a food sealer for our anniversary :D

FLIX, you da man!

I sure wish i had one of those vacuum food sealers.
Always thought of ideas like this one.

Seal up a Bic lighter, too! :)

Medecine, pills, water purif. tabs, etc etc etc.

Honestly I don't see how you guys live without a food saver, you should see how small a change of underwear and socks is when vacuum sealed, and completely waterproof. I use mine for everything, and I am always thinkng of new uses. Chris

That looks like it would go well with a Pro-Pocket ball cap. (Looks at hat, starts thinking)
