Keep your Busse in a sheath?

Just wonder if you have a Busse with coating on the blade is it ok to store it in a sheath?

Also, why is it that you should not keep a knife in a sheath? Rust?

leather holds moisture and has corrosives from the tanning process. It is not recommended to keep your good knives in a sheath for any length of time. On the other hand kydex should be safe if it is dry and many people report no problem as infi is pretty resistant to corrosion.

i do both, some stored in sheaths, leather and kydex, some stored otherwise.

but even in leather, i take my knives out and play so often that any moisture contained in the leather is not real detrimental.

Bernard Levine of the Knife Collecting and ID Forum cautions that if your knife is to always be a safe queen, that it is better to store out of sheath for reasons already given. If you're gonna use 'em it doesn't matter.

Lemme reiterate my views on storing knives in leather:

The better the quality of the leather the less chances of there being any corrosive salts left in the leather. The type of leather I use is top shelf stuff, I've got high carbon steel knives that rest in their sheaths constantly. But be sure of the quality of the leather, the cheap leather some mass makers use is very questionable.

Leather doesnt hold water. If your sheath gets wet you must let it fully dry before using it again, this can take anywhere from over night to several days depending on the temp and moisture in the air. When the leather no longer feels cool to the touch your pretty safe. A good quality leather conditioner is highly recommended.

Cheap leather will also loosen with time and use, will become spongy and floppy. Good leather will stay solid and soften slightly with time. Keeping the leather conditioned will extend its life considerably.

Get quality stuff, the cheaper stuff only wears out faster and you'll end up spending the same or more in the long run.

The same basic rules apply with kydex, a good sheath will last forever but a bad one will ruin a good blade.

I've found that on a double cut, one sheath I have slightly darkened the blade. Not enough for concern, where as I wouldn't imagine it would be a problem

A good thread. Something I've been wondering about myself. Thanks guys.

i've seen a knife in a leather sheath (in my pocket) on a particularly humid s. florida summer day create surface rust on s30v stainless. I've got to agree with leatherhog (would be a fool not to!) about corrosive salts and buying quality leather.

speaking of that... you do work on nonBusse knives don't you leatherman? I've got a few with cheap leather sheaths as you mentioned above.

The only knives I keep in a sheath are the ones I use. I keep a check on them if not used lately. As Leatherman said, make sure sheath is dry...thats a no brainer though.

If the knife is only for collection and will never be used I would not put it in a sheath.

Brand of knife also makes a differance. I would say Busse stored in sheath in mint shape would bring the same as one never in sheath. On the other hand a newer Randall that has a sheath with sheath marks from knife will usually bring a little less.

For the record, I am one that can ruin good leather. LOL (It SEEMED like putting it in the toaster oven was a good idea at the time. On the plus side, I can hammer nails with this sheath.)

If I was usin the knife, I'd leave it in the sheath. Storage? Even with GOOD leather, I'd be leery.

I've kept my SFFFGBRW/ZE&DTH (Satin BR) in it's special Leatherman sheath since I got it. That's over two years.

Every month or so I pull it out to see if there are any problems. The only thing I've seen is that the snap on the strap is imprinting on the handle. The blade is still minty fresh.

I also keep my Piano Key in it's Leatherman sheath, but with the mirror polish I doubt a stain could stick to it. :D

Welllll, yea, I guess so, begrudgingly ;) Dont be surprised if it comes back with a complex. :o Every time I get a non Busse in the shop it scampers to a corner of my bench grumbling incoherently.

Seriously yea, I love to get different knives in the shop to work on, variety keeps me fresh. :D

Something to add to the Safe Queen knives. I'd avoid the cardboard as well. Ever stropped a knife on cardboard? Polishes that edge right up huh. Corrugated cardboard contains a lot of impurities that will cause rub marks and in some cases scratches. If you've got a particularly valuable knife I'd suggest those zipper cases like uncle Mike makes, they're cheap insurance against heartache.

I have had both of my knives end up rusting a little in sheath due to me not wiping them off properly after use, and all my sheaths are kydex. wrap a wet blanket around anything and it won't really be good for it.... unless its on fire...
