How would you keep your sharpening stuff clean and free from metal particles when out in the bush for extended periods of time?

Would using sand be a good idea for an abrasive or is this too coarse?

Maybe carrying a bag full of disposable ceramic rods is a good idea. :)

Just carry a brillo pad or 2 with you.

Or a few of those green scouring pads and alittle water will do the trick.

Bruise I believe sand would be a fine idea. There's usually more than one grade of sand in a sand deposit in the bush.
And since an abrasive works best with a little lubricant, like soap, you may have that in your supplies.:)
If not in many parts of the country there are certain plants that yeild a soap like substance that will keep you and your hair clean.
No one says it can't be used for cleaning hones as well.;)

AFAIC there's no such thing as disposable Ceramic anything.:(

A little more info on the sand you might find interesting is that the American ndns used sand for a myriad of finishing techniques both on very hard wood and stone.
The Indin Pipes we talked about some while back were once finished with natural sand as that's all there was to finish stone with.
The sand was carefully seperated and was often traded long distances.
This is from oral traditions so it may not be accurate  according to the non-ndns.:p
The very beautiful hard rock maple round ball warclubs from the Northeast were often finished using fine grades of sand.

Water and a swipe or two on a rough cloth (leg of your jeans) will clean ceramics, and the harder synthetic Arkansas stones. Softer, more porous stones like the natural Arkansas will need a light oil and some scrubbing with a cloth to float it out of the pores and remove it. Or, you can lick it off, if your One-A-Day vitamins aren't delivering enough iron

A light oil, like cooking or baby oil, is usually the best way to clean and protect the blade. A small bottle of corn oil doesn't weigh very much and can help in a multitude of different ways.
