I live in CA but If I were to permanently keep a khuk in the car, will I have a problem with rust? Because I have a cheap non HI khuk that I have on the floor next to my bed and sometimes it starts to grow rust near the tip on its own. Will I have a problem with moisture and condensation? maintainance? BTW I didnt coat the blade with any oils or protectants so maybe thats the reason.

The last time I looked, couple of weeks ago the one under the seat of our car was still fine. It's been in there for months.:)
All it has on it is a little Ballistol-Lube but you can't tell by looking at or feeling it.
And it's a villager so I don't care if it gets a little rust on it anyway. All of the khuks in Nepal are rusty according to Bill.:D ;)

I usually use a light coat of gun oil on the blades of my khukuris, that seems to do the trick. Then every month (sometimes two) I go thru and oil them all (along with the rest of my high carbon blades)and apply "Hoofflex" or lanolin to the handles if they're horn. Wood handles get "Linspeed" oil. Khukuris that get used are cleaned and oiled after each usage before they are put away.

Thanks all. Im also looking for a villager to stick in the car but they seem to have none at this time

I've kept both an AK and a GS in my car. Never had any rust problems, and they went months without any maintenance whatsoever. I don't think you have to worry about it.

You'll probably have bigger issues with handles cracking and/or shrinking. I never had any problems with that either. Both the AK and GS were handled with well seasoned material. I would advise checking any khuk once in a while. If you do that, then you shouldn't have any problems.

Wood or horn, what would you recommend in terms of cracking/shrinking toughness?

One old trick I've learned from a wise old man is to wrap the oiled knife(Kruk)in sheath with newspaper and a rubber band. I wrapped mine with brown packing paper and it did not rust. Someone may explain the logic?

Actualy Shintaro, Newspaper promotoes rust as it is highly acidic so the wise old man was very lucky if that worked for him!

Cheers

I think if the newspaper is not touching the blade, and is wrapped around the sheath... it may help absorb humidity before it gets to the blade?

The best thing to do is simply put some kind of protective on the blade, handle and scabbard and leave well enough alone. The Ballistol-Lube works well for all three and saves using different products for the different materials and because I'm lazy, like Bruise, it's just easier for me.:p ;)

All newspaper will do is draw moisture and with that the danger of mildew developing. I hate the smell of mildew!!!!:barf:

Some of the brown wrapping paper has an oily substance embedded in it, not much though. There's an old ringworm treatment that was derived from burning pieces of a brown paper shopping bag on a china or ceramic plate and using the oily residue on the ringworm. Another "Old Time" treatment that really works.
Don't know if it would work on storing khuks under a car seat though. Maybe if the scabbard had ringworm?:D ;)
