Keeping points pointy

So my brand new ritter mini grip doesn't have much of a point on it for some reason (I bought two of them, the other one is fine) and I've been filing the back a little bit to restore it. As far as I know sharpening the back of the tip is really the only way to get it pointy again, excluding simply sharpening the edge for a very long time. I've only got one folder that has seen a whole lot of use, as I have several and often rotate. How long can a knife take this sharpening on the spine before it becomes a problem? Obviously, the more it is done the weaker the tip becomes. Any tips for easy ways to restore it and how to maintain it?

Re-pointing is pretty common, especially when sharpening other people's knives. :D If you're rounding the tip every time you sharpen, you need to modify your sharpening. Just stop before the tips leaves the abrasive. As far as repointing, you sound like you're doing it right by bringing down the spine until it meets the edge bevels.

Funny, I've had two Ritters, mini s30v and mini m4, and both had tip issues from the factory. I didn't help by being careless with my Sharpmaker, though. Spine treatment works well, but, as you seem to suspect, don't overdo it. My guess would be a few times is okay, then you'll start to experience real problems. Better to adjust your sharpenign technique on the edge.
