keeping the knife clean

Hey guys/girls at blade forums,

I am extremely new to knives. I don't know much about them at all. I got my first one yesterday. I picked up a kirshaw blur knife in all black. It's ID number is 1670 black. I love the knife but I wanted to know about what mainenance it would need. I'm more of a collector for some knives I have and I tend to use this one for simple cuts (like string for instance) and self protection. I know that resharping a knife can also drop the value of the knife so I don't tend on using it to that amount.
My question(s) though is when I'm carrying it in a humid environment and with my fingers being on the blade to close it would it cause it to rust?

What knife blade materials rust easier than others?
and lastly I just wanted to know what substance one might use to prevent rust on the blade.

I may sound like I'm being overprotective but I want to keep the knife in good shape for collectable purposes mostly.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Just wipe it down with a clean cloth, or one with some type of light oil on it. The blade is stainless and while it will rust, it is somewhat rust resistant. I wipe mine down with an old gun rag with gun oil on it. The Blur is a great knife, and you should use it and enjoy it. It won't increase in value I don't think. Sharpening it if done properly will not diminish its value.

Mr fishblade,

Your knife is a very nice blade, I've handled many Kershaw Blurs and the black on black ones are a classic. I though I would post a link here for you since you are getting into collecting, and if Blurs are your fancy then this would be a good start:

And if I were you, I'd get at least one Blur to beat up so you don't have to worry about keeping them ALL clean ALL the time. A "blem" is always a good idea for something like that, you can find these at www.kershawguy.com. ("Blem" is short for "blemish" or blemished blades / factory mistakes - NO functional problems whatsoever, typically just appearance issues - not pretty enough to sell at full price )
