First of all, I just found this awesome forum today.

My son will be turning 18 and graduating high school this year. We are planning a little ceremony with several men in our church to commemorate. He loves pocket knives. My grandfather collected knives many years ago and has given him several old timers, case and others. I would like to present him with a traditional two or three blade QUALITY knife that he can keep as a reminder and pass on to future generations. A dealer recommended a Case knife, but I would like to get suggestions from knowledgeable people who aren't trying to make a sell. Price is a consideration, but not a deciding factor. Recommendations?

-Obviously that won't be all he gets, just something he can keep.

Case is solid, love both my Trappers. They have the traditional sheepsfoot blade which I love to use opening packages.

Welcome to BF. There are some very collectible Cases available if you want to stay with that company. OTOH, if you want to branch out a bit and still keep it traditional, GEC, Queen, Tidioute, Northfield, and Northwoods all do very nice traditional pocket knives that are very well made. There are also quite a few custom makers on BF. He might really appreciate a one-of-a-kind custom from one of the makers here. You can find them in the custom knifemakers subforums.

You might also consider an alox scaled Swiss Army Knife, such as the Victorinox Pioneer... fantastic knife!

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the great advice. I hadn't considered a custom one, but I will start looking there. Will also check out the others mentioned. I'm not locked in on Case. Thanks again for the options offered.

Great idea!^
Try to find out, discretely, your Son's favorite folder pattern.

There are several makers who are members here, and they make some really sweet traditionals. I'm far from a traditional type of knife user/collector, but there are some of TA Davison's, Ken Coats, txwoodchip, Gene Wiseman, and Rick Menefee's knives just to name a few...oh man...

Thanks. I definitely want it engraved. I posted on the WANTED section. You guys are great. Thanks again. I looked through the FOR SALE section.. Man these guys make some good looking stuff.

I'd go with a Schatt and Morgan file and wire large heavy duty jack. I'm not really into traditional knives and this particular blade gets my motor turning. :D

I did a similar thing for my son and choose to have a mini-griptilian customized at the Benchmade website. You can choose between full size or mini, color of blade and scales, blade metal, and color of clip and screws. And for no additional cost have something special engraved on the blade. He loves it.

Many years ago, in a relatively brief and financially painful foray into the cutlery industry, a gentleman ordered one of my knives for his son's 13th birthday. He asked for the knife to be specially engraved. By his own account, the lad abused the hell of it, but he still treasures it, grew into a knife lover, and occasionally posts online about it, for example http://www.bushcraftliving.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8830 (post 9), http://www.bushcraftliving.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1106&page=7 (post 68), and http://bushcraft-educational-society.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2617.0, where he tells the story:

"The one knife; then its the Jack Black U1 made by Pat Mitchell. I was given it on my 13th birthday by my father on the first time I had met him since being a baby as he worked abroad. It was engraved ' To William on his 13th birthday' and ' a man is only as sharp as his knife' on the other... It's the one all other blades get measured to, and I've not found one to surpass it yet, im sure its going to live on as a beater for a good few generations."

He also recently had it refurbished in Sheffield, England, where it was made, these are his pics (before and after refurbishment by Stuart Mitchell of Sheffield - unfortunately the engraving was lost):

Hope you find something special for your son (and if you buy a custom get it engraved before the steel's hardened!) :)

I may have to scrap up some more money... I do want it engraved and as A.G. Russell said above, he probably won't carry it ---much. He treasures the gifts with a history or meaning. Hopefully he'll keep it safe, and in a few years find it again and keep it with him. I've done that with a knife I got of my fathers when he passed away. These suggestions have affirmed my decision to get the knife. I may have to get investors to help pay for it now though.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice dalefuller and A.G. Russel and others... I found a custom knife maker near my home in Georgia through the GA knife makers guild. He's gonna build a custom single-blade folding knife and have it engraved. Great guys to respond to a newbie. Thanks again.
