Gun will probably be fine, likely just needs a new barrel.

The barrel is fine too. It's not a new problem, and shouldn't have surprised anybody even when it was new. The purpose of a handguard is to protect your hand from getting burned by the hot barrel. Make it out of plastic, it melts.

A few years ago a guy posted on rec.guns about firing a full-auto assault pistol until the wood stock caught fire. That took more than 100 rounds, though.

actually, I was referring to the M60 video where they fired 1500 rounds continuously ;)

Oops, I hadn't noticed we were talking about two different events. Good point about cheap plastic ... if you really wanted to make a handguard out of plastic one would think it would be possible to come up with something that could stand 100 rounds ... Bakelite? But it probably wouldn't be cheaper (or lighter) than sheet metal, so what's the point?

Yeah, cheap crappy plastic melts.

I'd also like to point out that the rest of the pistol was still perfectly fine and fully functional.

This is funny. Isnt this the PLR pistol? We got a Kel Tec SU-16a in the other day and i was looking at it today at work. nice looking gun but looks like a kids toy. the ENTIRE thing is plastic almost.

Firing ammuntion produces heat. :)

More ammunition equals more heat. If you can't dissipate it at a rate that matches the rate at which you fire, the firearms will continue to get hotter. Why do you think you see full-auto AK-47's in so many different configurations. The older wood foregrips burn when you dump multiple mags in rapid succession. Setting a wood grip on fire is the least of my concerns because that heat will burn flesh on my hands too!

The new M4's have improved heat shields to protect the operators hands. In my case, I am using a railed forearm from Larue Tactical as a partial heat "radiator" just like the fins your lawnmower engine.
