Just picked up a 4#+ jersey, 5-5/8 bit, 7-1/4 length,Must be older didn't have ridges in eye.
Sharpened up nice, just a Little chip in the toe(Will stone out next sharpening)and fitting the handle from House:)
Next a Chop-off,4# Connecticut,Jersey,Michigan,Dayton and maybe a hytest or David Foster

Looks good. I have a jersey waiting for a handle and your selection just swayed me in the same direction.

Another nice piece, Doug! Here's my wager for the chopping showdown:

Racer (Foster or Hytest)
Connecticut
Everyone else, haha!

Can't wait to see that thread, Doug!!!

That will be a fine cutting axe. Now this man knows how to grind and hang an axe!

John

Revisited my project bucket after seeing your axe finished. Don't have a handle yet but bent a kydex mask for the jersey today. Take care and thanks for the motivation.

Yes, had some kydex left over from another project- probably try to get some orange or bright blue if I make another . I'm thinking about making masks for axes that might be loaned out for safety reasons, mostly when transporting.
Here are a couple others- one on a hatchet I forged. The other on a Vaughan (I suspect) one piece camp hatchet restored for the grandson of the original owner.
I put snaps on both sides of the jersey mask. I will fit a longer reinforced rubber strap that passes around the handle when I get it hung.

After seeing your mask,I did a search ,more stuff to buy:eek:
Orange would be a perfect,I spend a lot of time hunting for mine.
Nice job,on the hatchets and masks.

Thanks

Kydex is fun to work with, I'm surprised with how little it seems to be used for axes sheaths. I'm thinking about making a general blade mask with retaining strap. Every time I sharpen a axe for someone I end up cardboard and duct taping it.
I like orange and safety green but even they can blend in with some fall leaves. Last time this came up here I researched and saw that bright blue is "hotter" on the color scale- and it does not occur in nature. Have to make up a couple and see.
A tip- I found taping a washer to the axe before molding in the location where I put the snap helped.
It built a recess into the mask , gives clearance for the snap back.

Nice. Well done. Time to put in the 100 handle order from House. Wonder how long that will take?

Hey Moosecreek, what's that thing (pivot point) on your axe in the first photo and how's it attached?
