Based on forum recommendations from historical threads and plenty of research, I opted for the Kelty Redwing 2900 "Rucksack" as my main pack.

Any experiences/opinions with this particular backpack?

I just purchased the 2400 after some research and accolades from respected friends.

Haven't had a chance to use it in the field yet, but so far I'm impressed with construction and design.

What do you plan on using it for? I have the 2400 and it is excellent. The 2900 is too big imo. If I want to carry that much gear, I would opt for a more substantial pack with a little heftier belt and frame. You can get a lot of gear in the 2900, enough to be real uncomfortable in a hurry. But if most of what you carry will be light and bulky, then maybe the 2900 is a good deal. Overall, I love the design of this pack. I spent months searching for a "day and a half" pack before I settled on this one.

Hoodoo,

I plan on using it as everything from an overnight backpack, to a carry-on bag, or piece of luggage, to a gear bag.

I heard one other complaint like yours that said it seemed too big for a daypack, yet not large enough--or built like--a larger hiking pack. The thing of it is, however, the 2900 has something of an internal frame in it, like the larger packs.

I also like the idea of the larger capacity for the bulkier, lighter material, like you said, which makes it a very good overnight pack when carrying a foam mattress or whatever.

I,ve had the 2400 for about 6 years now, its a great pack. The 2900 should sustain you for "light' three day trips, ans as carry on. The internal frame, wasit belt, and padding are excellent. I,ve about decided to go with the Kelty Gale(3500 cu. in.) as my main three day pack, and go with a 1900 of some design for day trips though.
