HI,

I have been lurking for a while now and this is my first post in "custom and handmade knives". Quick introduction. I am a part-time maker , mostly slipjoints. I am interested in making a better knife and in this hope , would like to get feedback on knives that I have made. That being said, you guys have a really nice forum going here.

This one is a Vintage Barlow pattern with Mother of Pearl scales.

3.5 closed
ATS-34 blades and springs
flat ground-as ground finish on blades
Spear and pen blades
long pull on master blade and standard nail nick on pen blade
one piece milled 410 SS frames and bolsters, relieved for blades.
Mother of Pearl scales. Shows a lot more color than my camera picks up.

Well thanks for looking and any critique's are MORE than welcome.

Ken, Looks like a very nice piece. I really like the spacer detail for the pen knife. Maybe just a little, subtle filework might set things off and say "handmade". Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments James,

While I do gets some requests for filework on my slipjoints , normally my customers like a "clean look"

Not to get off subject but I see your from the St Louis area. I owned and operated Catfish Guns for 18 years down in Imperial.

I like it Ken. There's nothing major I'd want to see changed. I also like the detail of the spacer on the pen knife. I haven't seen that before.

Thanks for the comments !

The finish is as-ground 400 grit. I had thought about going with more of a satin-scotch bright type finish. Also considered a mirror finish. The bolsters are a 800 grit finish. while the frame and springs on the back are a as ground 400 grit also. The inside springs are a mirror finish with a 400 grit finish on the sides of the inside of the frame.

Chuck is right I think, especially for a MOP (i.e., dress) piece.

I think it is a wonderful looking piece, elegant and clean, with great lines.

If I was "tweaking" it for my personal taste I would ask for the following changes:

- Hand rubbed finish on the blades to around 800 grit, I have a very strong personal preference for the finish to run parallel to the length of the blade rather than perpendicular.

- On the main blade I would have the tip slightly higher, more central, or take the clip all the way to the tip.

- The bolster to scale joint to be dovetailed.

I am sure this would add to the price, but in light of the great design and execution that you have already achieved I think it is deserving of these extra touches, and would take if from a piece that I would admire and take note of, to one I would part with money for.

Good work, I hope you take my comments in the context that they are meant.

i don't know anything about slipjoints but that is sweet....the only thing i would change is the blade finish.....only because it is a fancier piece witht the m.o.p......hope to see more of your work......ryan

a lovely clean little folder. As a gentleman's little folder I like the level of finish on the blade you could use it and it will not show as bad
