Craig,

Just to keep expectations fresh in our minds, how is the Special Project Ken Onion Khukuri doing?

Not really trying to press, but it sure was a long and hot topic while it lasted.

Great question - Lalit got the photos yesterday, along with the video I sent (he'll be selling copies in his store). I'm going to go out on a limb and, assuming he is confident in the design, am going to order them next week.

Regards,

Craig.

Craig,

Thanks for the info. Gives me a chance to go back to "peanut butter and mayonaise sandwiches" for a while and start saving for the anticipated event.

Remember fellow GH members, it's only a little starvation!

DD, an aside from the Onion, have you ever handled a Cheetlang? It's the most excellent khukuri I've ever encountered. How 18" of sharp steel can be so fluid and still stop on a dime is beyond me. (trying hard not to imagine one 15" and 14 oz)

BTT, the long-anticipated Onion will deserve some serious looks.

Lt. Dan,

I thought long and hard about a Cheetlang. It was a very near thing, but my GH Sirupati is 20 inches long and weighs 1 poung 6 ounces. I also own a competitor's "KK" in 22 inches that weighs 1 pound 9 ounces with a wood handle, and in 18 inches that weighs l pound 2 ounces also wood handled.

Actually, as mentioned in many posts, I prefer and carry my 20 inch Sirupati for just about all my uses. It has enough spine for splitting and chopping, and is light and long enough for "martial arts". The only thing that I've had to learn to live with is the horn handle!

However, the Ken Onion looks like a real sweet belt knife. We can call it the Ken Onion, can't we Craig? Or is it going to have another name?

WOW! A name that Khukuri Contest!!

DD, it looks like you have the niche covered pretty well. But should you find yourself in a situation with the extra cash, and uncertain what khukuri or sword to buy next, you might want to check out the Cheetlang. The handle is super comfortable and makes the blade feel even more nimble than my (excellent) SN1. As for the weight, my digital fishin' scale might be weighing a bit light nowadays, so I can't quote to the ounce with all certainty. (used it to weigh swamp ash bodied Telecasters)

Yes, the Ken Onion Khukuri could use another name. Being Army, I'm naturally apt to call it the KOK or OK.

Good things being worth the wait/weight...Dan

The "Ken Onion" is fine - I'm making it with his full knowledge and consent. If he does object to using his name, I'll certainly change it. But since it's not a huge production model, Ken was kind enough to lend his expertise in exchange for a free "Ken Onion!"
