Hi guys,
My K.O. Khuk. arrived yesterday (No.4
), safe & sound after a short stay with Australian Customs.
First off, the construction is very good, I can only find 2 small problems, a small gap in the handle (easily fixed with some gap-filling superglue) & the brass around the lanyard hole was a incomplete.
Everything else is of a very high standard, the horn slabs for the handle are almost pure black and very highly polished, to the point where, if viewed in sunlight, it looks like black glass. The blade has an almost mirror finish and was nice & sharp out of the box.
I've only had a chance to handle the khuk. for a short while, but I get the impression that it will make an outstanding general utility/camp knife - able to handle light to medium chopping tasks and wood splitting as you would do with a normal khukuri. The handle shape, however makes it a lot easier to do 'traditional' chores - making tent pegs, whittling stakes and the blade is thin enough to be an OK slicer.
The scabbard holds the blade firmly, but allows for a quick draw when needed, all the stitching is even and very solid.
My only concern is how the handle, which has a few sharp points due to its contoured grip, will perform when used for extended use as a shopper - some smoothing work may be needed. I may also cut some fine notches into the handle where it flares out to form the 'guard' to give a slightly better grip in these areas.
Over the next few months I should have a chance to really give this one a work out. When I do I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again Craig for the great service & for getting this project off the ground.
Andre
