Hi,
Does anyone own or have handled the custom from Ken Onion? How does the blade fare for everyday use and self-defense applications? Thanks.

Hi Jon,

For everyday use, Onion's Random Task is a great candidate - rather compact size and a pure utilitarian sheepsfoot blade. With the straight cutting edge, it is also easy to keep sharp with little effort. If you are looking for your perfect daily carry folder, put this on your list. Not only is it handy but has a very clean appearance, and the Speed Safe opener is prett neat.

For defense, I would suggest that you look to other knives. Sheepsfoot blades, with their blunt tips, are ill-equipped for slashing and especially stabbing.

Hope this info helps!

Hi Dexter,
I have been looking forward to handling the large task (production model) as I have had a chance to handle the Mini Task. I would have figured that the Mini Task would have been decent somewhat for slashing, maybe in the reverse grip or something but alas. It's just too bad I can't decide what to do, wait until the large one comes out in the production model or spend the money now to get the mini production one. I do want both so... Well, in any case, thank you for your help, it is appreciated.

I think the original poster was asking about the custom Onion knife, and the replies all addressed the Kershaw version.

I have one of Onion's knives with the speed-safe (or whatever he calls it) mechanism. Everything is done very very well, grind lines, action, etc. The only thing that isn't quite right is the liner lock. It pops with palm pressure. I sent it back, Ken was very anxious to make things right, but it still pretty much pops (it just takes more pressure now). Looking at the liner, it's obvious to me the "fix" wouldn't work. I did notice problems with other of his liner locks on the table as well.

You know my feeling already, the liner lock is a mixed bag at best, and most custom makers can't do them right consistently.

Hi All,
I'm sorry, this post should/could have been in the general discussion, I will be more careful next time,
