P.S. You know... I have not seen much of Ken on the forum lately.

Are you out there buddy?

Ditto what automatic said. I visited with Ken a lot at SHOT, we were about 20 feet apart, He gave me a Kershaw of his design and I ordered a knife from him I was so impressed.(Keep in mind I am not a collector!) I had seen them before but hadnt handled one much. Must be seen to be appreciated!

I've heard that he's got quite a long waiting list (someone told me as long as two years!). He used to post here a few months ago, but I guess he's pretty busy cranking out those speed-safes.

Besides the outstanding quality of his work, there is also Ken`s sense of design, which I find superb. Ken`s folders have a wonderful line; many curves and round edges, lots of recurved blades. He uses a nice variety of steels, as well as natural and synthetic handle materials. Ken`s knives have color and a real sense of style; a rarity in these "tactical" days. Add to that the Speed Safe mechanism, and you have a knife that`s hard to top, imho.

Ken is my favorite maker of custom folders at the moment.

i talked to ken a couple days ago.
he is not taking any new orders--demand for his knives WAY outstrips his production.
he said he will not take new orders because he is not willing to compromise quality in order to increase volume. admirable, i think.
also, he prefers not to sell to dealers but to try to get what few knives that are extra each year out to the general public via knife shows.
btw, ken seems like a super nice guy.

I have talked to Ken several times over the last year in getting a knife as a gift. I last talked to Ken after Christmas. He was just keeping the tip of his nose above water with all of the work he has. He is really too busy for a one man shop BUT he doesn't skimp on quality or "fit-n-finish". Even the edges of the pocket clip are rounded over. The only thing that has an edge is the blade.

I hope to get another one or two of his knives in the future.

Well....uh uh....

I've been setting here for ten minutes looking at the screen trying to figure out just how to respond to this thread . WOW!!

I am flattered beyond words!

Sorry for my absence as I have been to Japan,Oregon, and Las Vegas in the last month and a half as well as trying to make some knives for the vegas classic and prototypes for Kershaw .Good thing I started early . I'm back now and ready to roccccck!!

You guys inspire me, seems that getting out and meeting people and just chatting with folks of a common mind has a way of validating the hours and hours of shop time spent hoping the public will enjoy your efforts and that, that crazy idea you decided to bring to life was a great idea afterall .I wouldn't trade that feeling for anything ,it makes the endorphins kick in and makes you feel as if anything is possible.

Mahalo!!!

Aloha!!! Ken Onion

Ken,

I learned about your knives when you started to design knives for Kershaw. I got the Whirlwind and the Speed Safe feature is just excellent. When I saw your new design, the Avalanche, I realized that this is the knife I was looking for. I tried to contact Kershaw to get some info (whether they are going to make it also with satin finished blade, different handle material etc.) but I have not received any answers. Since you are in close contact with them, could you provide the correct e-mail to contact them?

Also the custom - on which design was based the Avalanche - is the most beautiful knife I have seen so far. Is that true that you are not taking any orders anymore??

I hope you don´t mind me posting this picture.

David,

Thank you for your kind comments.
I don't believe at this time kershaw will be offering the Avilanche knife with a satin finnish mainly because they are trying to keep the cost down. The anniversary knife is the same as the Avilanche but it has all the bells and whistles.

With regard to me not taking orders now this is a temporary thing as I need to clear up some of the backlog.
To improve my efficiency I will be getting some parts cut out for SOME of my most popular models.I will continue making knives from scratch also. I am attempting to supply the demand and offer a product that is affordable.

Hopefully I will be able to take orders again soon. The time frame will depend upon the efficiency of utilizing pre cut parts.
Rest assure I will not compromise quality for volume.I will still offer the best product I know how to make,I'mjust trying to eliminate some of the grunt work.

Hope I answered your questions.

Aloha!!! Ken Onion
