I am making knives from old crosscut saw blades. My latest knife, I used a small furnace made from two fire bricks I hollowed-out and used a Map torch to heat the blade to remove the hardness so I could more easily work on it. That worked great. But when I began the process to hardened the blade, I heated the blade (approximately a 1/12" in thickness) to cherry red and immediately dipped it in cooking oil that had been heated to maybe 150 degrees, I expected it to sizzle, smoke and produce some flames. It did none of these things. What did I do wrong? Is the blade hardened? HELP!!
