After reading Thinkofthechildrens thread on inertial openingInertial opening I got to thinking, which almost allways leads down a scary path. I always thought inertial openings and kenetic opening were the same. Spyderco states that thee Gunting is excelent for kenetic opening. What is a kenetic opening and how is it performed? Can it be adapted to other folders?

I beleive the kenetic opening refers to the ability of the user to drag the gunting towards oneself scraping the horn along the targets body. The horn grips the target and pulls the blade open. Spyderco warns users not to do this to a live target as it can cause serious cuts.

A kenetic opening is where you open the blade by pulling it across a surface(such as a bad guys arm). It can only be done with a knife that has a large ramp on it(like the ramp on the gunting).

Inertia Opening is where the knife's movement stops and the inertia built up allows the blade to continue it's motion till it's open..such as a twisting of ones wrist while holding a folding knife..
any knife wiill inertia open as Mike Janich so aptly shows....
Engagement Opening is where the blade is engaged or hooked into an object so that it is pulled open by the motion of drawing..
this is an Emerson wave patented specialty..it's FAST!
Kinetic Opening is the transfer by impact or kinetic force to open the blade while the knife motion continues..Dragging it across a surface will do it..abliet poorly but impact within the motion opens it quickly..
BAM..its open....
SPYDERCO @ my urging tells people not to open it on live parts, because people seem to play with their sharp toys and lo and behold cut themselves or others in this play..that's why we have trainer DRones to practice with..

have a great 4th of July...

Wouldn't the motion be ackward to use in an SD situation? If you brushed the blade to open on the person, you still need to turn your wrist before you could strike the target. Or maybe I'm not quite getting the picture.

it's very fast..its a positive opening..
As I said dragging it across something or pulling it across is an opening... abliet a poor way..OK maybe I should say a slower way rather than poor..semantics might effect how one views or reads this...
but it will work...
hit it..it pops open..BAM..
Why turn your wrist?
hit and enter..
hit and go...
hit and cut...
upon hitting one can immediately get a tip rip..an engagement cut...
Personally I prefer to bang on someone..no need to try to open the tool..It opens as i need or want it..And it works great in self defense aplications...

If you 'd rather be open as soon as you draw your tool..use a WAVE opener from Emerson..
If you'd rather "play with it"..using manual dexterity..use an inertia opening..
if you want to just bang and go use a Kinetic opener..
hmmm I guess one could even use an automatic opener...

Hm... I guess I'm kinda catching it now... ;)
I still gotta think about that for a bit.

Nah, thinking doesn't always lead down a scary path, but making up stories about spyderco products usually does. Can we expect a story next week about you kin-opening on a gang of drugged out bangers on your way home from your undercover gig?
