I have been using Kenneth Schwartz emulsions on 1X42 linen belts for several years.

The emulsions I purchased from him have worked great but have started to dry out over time.

Anybody know what sort of liquid he used? I would like to add some to them to keep it usable. I can't tell if it is oil or water based.

Unfortunately Ken passed away a few years ago so I can't ask him and I can't find any source for the same or similar emulsions.

I have some of his emulsions, too, which I got with my KME. I don't know what the base is, but if you call KME they may be able to tell you.

Ken's products were definitely not oil based. That was one of his selling points that differentiated him from some of the competition. My first instinct would be to use just a little water. To be sure, I just went downstairs to sniff my bottles of emulsion. I detect what I think is a hint of alcohol. That makes sense, as the alcohol will make the water a little wetter. I'd use water to thin out the emulsion, with just a splash of alcohol.

In this thread https://www.chefknivestogoforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10887, Ken sez:
Actually both the sprsy and emilsions are the same concentration. The difference is in the liquids used. Both are water soluble. The spray is deionized water. The emulsion is also water soluble but contains emulsifiers that keep the particles suspended - especially heavier particles > 2 microns. You also get a denser particle concentration especially on nanocloth. The emulsion also sticks better to strops and belt surfaces.

RustyIron and pwest, thanks for the info, I'm going to see if I can thin them out a bit. Sure would like to be able to use what I have since it would be difficult and expensive to replace.
