Kephart down the drain!

I put this compact Kephart to use at work last week removing some insulation, figuring it would gain a little character and give me an excuse to keep working on the edge. Between cuts I set it down on a pipe no less than 3' from the pictured drain, and when moving some material managed to knock it slightly sideways and onto the floor. "Oh, shoot", I thought, imagining it would hit tip down on the concrete floor...but no, it hit square on the butt end of the handle, bounced a 360, and made a perfect swish straight into the drain. Just like that, it was gone. No other sound than a subtle bloop.

My first thought was, thank goodness I have a different one on order, and the second was when would I be replacing this one? The water was pretty murky (and I had a customer coming back any time to watch me set things up) so I went on with work.

The happy ending: I managed to retrieve it - with visions of the fire dept showing up to help me right myself while shoulder deep into the floor drain I carefully reached down. I was actually nearly to my shoulder when I felt the blade, tip and sharp side up (of course) wedged in the first elbow of the drain. Thanks to long, skinny arms, this one survived...

good thing. she's a beaut!

quite the story. glad you got 'er back.

When I first started reading I thought this was a horror story, much better suited for Halloween. But after Kephart was retrieved I realized this was definitely a Thanksgiving story. Glad you were able to save it and get a good story to boot.

Great story and glad you got it back. She is a beauty.

aahhh!

My stomach got tight reading this post. It had the makings of a horror story.

Glad you were able to retrieve it! Thats a beautiful knife.

I was worried lol. Glad it had a happy ending sir. Good looking kephart for sure. Johns is one of the best kep patterns out there I believe.

I once kicked my Stanley razor knife down a floor heat duct in a partially finished house I was working in, reached in to get it and pulled out a Buck 450 folder! Thinkin' fast, I threw a One Dollar bill down there and reached in a pulled out....my dollar.........and my Stanley. I was the only guy workin' in that house that day so Buck became mine! Broke that knife clean in half later, trying to dig a .54 Cal Maxi Ball out of a tree that jumped out in front of the deer I was shooting at. Sent it to Buck and they replaced it no charge! It has been retired because I fear that it's luck may be run out.

Glad you got that JK out, if it was out of reach for arm or magnet I'd have been calling for a Jack Hammer!

B Jackson, all that luck and you didn't buy a lotto ticket !?

Same goes for you Sturubu, go buy a couple of scratch offs and collect a quick $1,000 !

Thanks, I am glad I was able to save it -without relying on power tools or emergency personnel!

Bigfattyt, I do have a good stash of magnets in my truck, but was wondering how they'd work in the iron pipe...luckily I did not have to try (this time). For now they are something to play with while on endless conference calls.

JackHammer, I did give it a good wash, but fortunately one of the boilers in the room has been condensing so the pH was probably pretty low. Good for no funk growing, and good thing I got it out of there fairly quickly, it could have lost its patina!

5Seven, the bath just enhanced the color, ha. Brings out the chatoyance, wouldn't you say? (been wanting to use that in a sentence)
