I like the history and simple elegance of the Kephart knife. At the risk of sacrilege I have some thoughts and a possible modification.

It’s not a stabber. The point is almost not pointy and not very useful. My idea is to make it into a round end instead of a pointy blade.

With a round end it would really excell as a skinner and it could be used as a push chisel or gouge to make bowls and spoons. Not to mention how much better it would be for peanut butter.

Of course you would need to carry another pointy knife for the jobs that you need a point for.

Any thoughts?

Maybe useless was too strong. I have found I like really pointy knives or really not pointy ones. For different tasks.

Trying to be the best of both worlds is a fine line.

hmm... If no point where would the blade grind end? Im just thinking that I would not want it sharpened all the way around the non-tip.

I find the BK62 blade shape to handle skinning ok, but I am one who prefers a pointier trailing point knife like a BK15 for skinning.

I am all for you modding your knife and I'd love to see it.

Remember that sharpening the "top" of the nose of the knife will yield a very very thick edge because the steel tapers from spine-to-edge, and only a little bit from handle-to-tip. It will not even be close to symmetrical. Not that you shouldn't try if that's what you want - just set your expectations accordingly.

I think the point of the point (haha!) is to be right inline with the straight handle, which makes it excel at drilling and other bushcraft chores. I wouldn't consider it a dedicated hunting or skinning knife, though obviously it will work fine if that's what you've got.
