any comments on the kerambit as a utility blade? is the kerambit used for anything but MBC / self-defense? what do you think about the kerambit by BOSS knives. see http://www.wowinc.com/boss-8.htm

any thoughts? I kinda like the design (at that price, I thinking of the kerambit as a plausible option over the Spyderco Merlin as my rope blade)- I believe the original custom cost over $500.

also, how do climbers utilise the kerambit as a rope cutter whilst keeping the hand-free - could someone explain the mechanics of that action.

I'm telling myself that the Liong-designed Kerambit will make a fine EDC/utility blade... yeah that's the ticket...
Cool design- no reason why it wouldn't perform as you require- with a little special "something".

I don't have a kerambit, so I can't tell you how one would work for utility/EDC. On the other hand, I've had similar thoughts to you, so if you're crazy for thinking that a kerambit might be an interesting solution for utility work, I'll be joining you in the rubber room. If you want really solid security in the hand, the kerambit offers it. Short curved blades are very useful for utility.

I do think the La Griffe solution is probably a better one than a kerambit for utility work. That is, shorten the handle, stick the hole up front. But I don't see why a kerambit wouldn't be useful for a short utility blade where handle security is a high priority.

Cool! Who makes it?

It looks in the photo as if you have the choice of using the end ring or not. Or is the photo deceiving, and the handle is short enough that you always have to use the end ring?

Joe,
The Crowfoot is from Rob Simonich's new factory endeavor: Mid-Tech.
Cost starts at $130, I believe.
I just got mine a couple days ago with Carbon Fiber scales. I don't know if he's making any more with CF scales though. He said he was hand-making the first scales since the factory made ones weren't ready yet. After the factory starts pumping out G-10 scales like in Jason's pic, I don't think CF will be an option any longer.

BTW - yes, you can use it without the ring. I also love mine, although the inside of the ring could use a little more chamfering.

It is a Simonich Mid-Tech Crowfoot! Mine is the basic model that is $129! That is an AWESOME price for a great knife with Bos treated S30V!! I can't imagine a better knife for the money!

You know what, Jason? I just realized that mine looks different than yours. Not only is mine CF (duh) but the pins used to secure the scales have a larger inner diameter than yours. See my pic: http://cpm440v.tripod.com/crowfoot.htm

(Anyone interested in what it looks like in CF check out the pic too!)

Paid $20 extra for the CF option. And I agree with Jason, it's a steal for the design/materials/execution.
