Several of you have recommended soaking an axe handle in kerosene. I have couple questions:
1. would a kerosene soak also work for a wooden handled sheath knife?
2. do you seal the container while soaking to prevent the volatiles from escaping?

I've heard of using kerosene to clean a wax coating off a new axe handle. Maybe it could be used to clean dirt, grime & grease off a handle...but I sure wouldn't soak any of my wood axe handles in it.

For my wood handled knives I use food grade mineral oil to treat them (if they need it).

I've seen a lot of mention of linseed oil or boiled linseed oil soaks. I'd use either of them on a wood handled knife.
