I got a folding knife with what I think is a bone handle. On one side of the blade it is marked with "kershaw oregon usa by kai japan" on the other side it's marked "1040."
Overall it looks indeed like a 1040 but it does not have the "finger grooves" on the handle ...
I hope you understand what I mean.
My English are far from perfect..
Tried to upload some pictures but they were too large.

All the pics I've seen has the finger grooves.
You should be able to post a pic from imgur. You'll need to set up an account, it's a free site

Please try to post your photo here. You can use Imagur or Vgy.me
I have never seen a 1040 without the finger grooves.

I'd bet the finger grooves were filed down to what you have now. From the gaps on each end, it looks like the original covers were removed, the finger grooves filed down to accommodate the covers on it now.

Thanks. I am dumbfounded. Sure looks like a genuine 1040 in every respect but the lack of finger grips.
Either you have an extremely rare piece, or that scales are not original. Not saying they aren't, just don't know.
Maybe kershawguy can shed some light on it if he's still here

If the handle has been filed down, they have done a great job! Can't find any tool marks!
Nothing I would accomplish with my angle grinder..
