So I've been thinking about this big knife ever since I first saw it. I've researched it and the steel looks good, I've seen the chopping tests, I've held a specimen and like the balance, and the price is very hard to argue with. The only thing that I hate about it is the secondary lanyard hold near the hilt of the handle. Not being able to see the tang it just plain looks like a weak point that might yield to failure. I just can't get over that.

But this gripe aside, is there any reason to avoid picking up the 1077 and letting it serve in my rotation of big choppers?

That gripe aside, there's probably no reason not to get a 1077 if you're just looking to add to what you already have, but that one gripe is pretty major in my opinion. I can't see any good reason to compromise durability by putting a hole there. It's an unnecessary weak point. I like Kershaw knives in general, but I think I'd pass on the 1077.

If you like your edge newsprint cutting sharp don't get one. The glass filled nylon sheath will instantly dull the cutting edge to the point it reflects light.

I really don't see those two holes as an issue. Many big knives have two or more holes in the tang to secure scales with pins. granted, that hole is closer to the ricasso.
I haven't seen any of them broken there. That doesn't mean that they haven't though.

There are plenty of people who have put these through all kinds of abuse without any damage whatsoever. Worrying about the lanyard hole is simply paranoia.
