Hello all, I have not logged in since the "passing" of the KAI-ZT forum. I am back now with a question about my ladies EDC the Kershaw 1595. It has some corrosion/sap residue I am unsure, on the blade itself and I would like to clean it off as much as possible before storing it away in packaging.

It appears this is not your typical Speed Bump and it should be treated well now. It has been sent in to KAI once for sharpening and for the lock mechanism to be fixed (sent back not fixed) and she just purchased a Kershaw 1595G10 to replace this one with. What would you suggest I do to the knife, and what do you think it is Should I use a cloth and some WD40 or a soft sponge, or a very light sanding?

Also, we took Amazon up on those very well priced G10 Speed Bumps and had to send one back, the lock mechanism was stuck open and we had to push and push, which broke the spring and the stud, tisk tisk.

One more thing, what steel is this model made of?

That knife has 13c26 blade steel, basically the same thing razor blade steel is made from. I had a couple of them long ago and sold them for other knives. You should disassemble it, wash all the parts in warm soapy water (Dawn soap), dry everything off, and reassemble with a little lube in the pivot area. The surface rust can be removed with a little WD40 and a paper coffee filter for abrasion.

For the USA-made Speed Bumps, I believe all of those use either Sandvik 13C26 or 14C28N (depending on when they were made). The most recent batch of China-made Speed Bumps use 8Cr13MoV. The earlier Spec Bumps came in CPM-154 and S30V.

Thank you both, I will do just that and I figured it was 13c26, but wasn't sure and couldn't find details on this one. I searched this blade before and another member said it must be rare/worth a bunch from what they see (and what I see now posted online and not just that 1 eBay ad) then KAI Corp posted in reply to the member's thread that it was the #1 made Speed Bump. How can that be if they are this uncommon and fetch that much NIB?

I think that variation of the Speed Bump with the grey handles was discontinued several years back. The Speed Bumps I've seen in the last few years had black G10 handles. As for value, it comes down to supply and demand. Having been discontinued for a number of years, the supply of NIB ones is probably low. I don't know about demand. I have seen a few collectors of the Bump models here and there.

I was a die hard BLUR only collector and have since moved on and sold all of the collectibles, such as BOR and SG10 AND CF154. I have a ZT0300BW arriving tomorrow and couldn't be happier though!
