Kershaw American Hunter Field Knife

Sandvik 14C28N takes a super razor edge with very little effort.

When I did side by side comparisons cutting manila rope, it held an edge about like AUS8, somewhat less than 440C.

14c28 is one of my favourite steels. Easy as hell to sharpen, takes a really fine edge, and holds it for quite a while I find.

Have handled a few of Kershaw's folders in this steel and find that it sharpens really easily. I've been wanting to try the Packrat shaped version but havent been able to find one in a store to look at. At some point I will probably just break down and order one.

Take a look at KershawKnivesMike's video here:

It has a size comparison of all of them.

EDIT - if you'd like a shot at a free one - Kershaw has been giving some away: http://www.facebook.com/KershawKnives

I like the steel, it is really easy to sharpen. Edge holding I think it's similar to VG-10 from my experience on my Kershaw Skyline and Spyderco Centofante 3.

First of all, thanks to everyone who replied to the thread, I apologize for not getting back to it sooner.

Well it's nice to have all your questions and concerns about a knife answered, even one I didn't bring up. First of all my apprehensions about the quality of the steel has been alleviated, it sounds like a decent steel.

Secondly the two videos that Knivesandguns linked, they really helped. I like to see a knife in hand, somehow reading the dimensions of the knife aren't enough, I don't know how many times I have bought a knife online and been surprised at the actual size. Also I got a look at the sheath.

Last, and I didn't mention this in the original post, I was concerned about the comfortability of the handle since the scales on the handle do not cover the tang of the knife. The second video is a mod of the handle which I would not be doing, but looking at the video helped me to decide that I don't think it wil be an issue.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to purchase the knife, right now I'm considering a Fallkniven WM1, but the Kershaw is attractive for the price point. Hell I could get both the Packrat shaped one and the smaller one for the same price as the WM1.
