I own several Kershaws, and it's definitely one of my favorite brands. However all of the assisted openers I have from them make a rattling sound when shaken. It in no way effects the performance of the knife, but is this just the nature of assisted openers? I read it's caused by the tension bar- but does this problem still persist on the Zero Tolerance folders? Any way I can fix this myself?

Yes it is normal. Putting some grease in the channel where the torsion bar sits will keep the rattling down.

I'm not a big fan of assisted openers. I do think the Kershaw line including the ZT lineup is the only assisted opener that I'd buy.

I have 6 different assisted kai knives and non of them rattle. Must not be very common.

It happens. The grease in the milled out area for the torsion bar gets pushed to the outside and a rattle starts. I use a little lithium grease to solve the problem.

Ken Onion's SpeedSafe was a great invention. There really is nothing comparable in terms of simpicity, reliability, and power without overkill.

Just a suggestion, something that works well for me is Vaseline. Most households already have some in the medicine cabinet. I like that it's 99.9% odor-free.

I really do love Kershaw in spite of whatever little gripes I've expressed here. Great designs, great quality, reasonable prices. Even though I won't spend $400 per month on knives like I used to, I will probably still pick up a one or two new Kershaws each year.

Do I need to take apart the knife to get to the tension bar?

Yes, for most models it will take a size 6 (for the handle screws) and size 8 (for the pivot bolt) Torx bit to open the knife. The knives open up and the torsion bar (you'll want to take the knife apart while the blade is deployed, not closed) just sits in a cavity in the front handle (they should have a thin metal plate covering them). It is simple enough to do that taking the knife apart does not void the warranty and Kershaw will actually send you parts (like the torsion bar) so that you can fix your own knife.
