I got a chance to get in to the Outdoor Retailers' Expo on Saturday 8/11/07. The Expo is open to retailers only, and gives manufacturers a chance to show their new stuff to potential retail outlets. Since it's not open to the public, getting a pass from a friend of mine and being able to attend the show was a bit of a treat.

An even bigger treat was finding the Kershaw booth. :D

This is a couple of the guys at the booth, and I think John talking to my wife about the Spec Bump (which she really loved, by the way  ).

Not only did they have some of their great production stuff, but they also had some new stuff I was able to get my paws on like the Tyrade and the R.A.M.!

They had some of their experimental blades showing the different steps of the process for joining the metals of the Tyrade, and some early experiments like the dovetailed blade in the upper right. The blade in the upper left with the chunks out of it was a test blade showing that the steel will snap before the joint comes apart.

REALLY cool stuff to actually get to play with since I've just seen pictures of it online. :p

What I was particularly excited about was the R.A.M. I've been anxious for this knife to go into production for a while now. I think it looks great, it's a nice smaller size, and the mechanism sounded really nifty.

It lived up to all my expectations.

The mechanism and everything about it is amazing. It's not assisted opening, but the flip makes it seem like it is. A nice little flip with an index finger (with just a little authority) and the blade snaps nicely into the locked position. It locks up really well with no play, and just as easily releases with the button. If you've seen the video (I'll try to find a link) it REALLY is that simple. The guys in the booth didn't know about the mechanics of the lock-up, so they couldn't explain it to me, but let me tell you that this thing feels and works just great. However it works, the mechanics seem to be contained in one side of the handle, so it looks like it will stay clean. Overall a GREAT design.

Finally, I don't remember if this has been posted yet:

Sweet pics. I like the black handled one next to the large one with the handle. Is the black one an auto?

sweet pics man. that Tyrade is now on my list of "kill if you have to in order to get it". ;)

that RAM does look good. so does the Leek.

if you have more pics please post them!

Thanks for sharing these pics. Man that Leek(let me wipe the drool up) is just plain awesome!!!

ol, with all the shows we do, I stopped taking pics at them a while ago.

Dang, I was looking real fine at OR too.

Hey I was at the OR show, where is an image of my pretty mug?

:D

I was checking out name tags kinda hoping to meet you, Thomas.

My wife and I were on our way out of town for our anniversary vacation, and had to drive to Los Angeles that day so I was in a bit of a hurry. We were 2 hours late leaving already.

I heard that there were a lot better things at the show to take pictures of. :D:DThomas??

 Maybe. Since we were in a hurry, I didn't spend NEAR as much time there as I would have liked to. About halfway to California I realized I should have asked if they had any of the Zero Tolerance line there for me to check out.

Thanks for the pics! That Leek is a 'must have'.

Oh yeah. What the guys were saying is that they're going to be incorporating the multiple-steel design in more of the knives because it allows them to use a better steel for the edge but still keep production costs down. Not to mention it looks REALLY good.

This was the only other picture I was able to take (I'll leave it full size for you guys to drool over):

You can see the R.A.M. in the closed position in the very bottom - giving you a good shot of the flipper.

There's also the Spec Bump my wife fell in love with :p and the Offset. I've heard people say they have guns that have less kick than the Offset does when it snaps open... they weren't kiddin.

And of course there is some other kinda nifty stuff... like the solid D2 fixed blade machete... ;)

How fast did the Tyrade open? I hope Kershaw uses the double torsion bar design like they use in the Offset, so the knife opens faster!

The Tyrade is another amazing knife. It had a nice authoritative "thwack" to it. It certainly wasn't as strong as the Offset, but it did open very nicely. The lock-up was good, and easy to operate.

mchlwise....how did the d2 fixed blade feel in your hand...any firt impressions on the knife....it looks alot nicer in your photo than catalogs.....ryan

I'm sorry to say I didn't even hold it. :o

They brought it out when we were talking about different steels, and one of the guys brought it out as an example of a blade made entirely of D2, and said it can "cut through anything."

Since I don't really have a use for it and was in a hurry, I didn't spend any time on it. Sorry.

:(

thanks mchlwise.....does anybody know the different steels they are gonna use in the tyrade leek etc....whatever other models are gonna have the two different steels.....i would assume zdp-189....is there an old post somewhere....thanks for any info....ryan

I don't understand your question. Try using periods and other punctuation.

The Tyrade has a composite blade made of 154CM and the edge being CPM-D2. The two steels are welded together with copper (in this case), while being HT'd. The overlay is carbon fiber. It is a titanium frame lock anodized in gold.

I believe that is the only Tyrade steel for now. The Leek has come in 440A, 13C26, S30V, and ZDP-189. I don't understand your post enough to answer better.

Sorry about the punctuation. It is very hard for me to type. I was talking about the composite blade. THat's the word i was looking for. My question was for the tyrade-Was there other steels planned for it. My other question was the leek in the picture is a composite blade. What is the steel in the leek. Also, Are there any other composite blades in the works. I was just wondering the list of steels that wil be used in these types of blades. I don't know that much about kershaw in general and don't follow all the posts here. Thanks for any info about these new blades. I like the look of the new blades and it is also a good way to offer great steels at a lower cost to us......ryan
