Did anybody disassemble Kershaw Avalanche? I am thinking of changing G10 handle to cocobolo or some other nice wood, but I am afraid to touch this miraculous "sped safe" mechanism.
Will I able to assemble it back?
and by the way - Is G10 glued to metal frame?

Thanks, Vassili.

Hello,

I disassembled my boa a few times, I think I got it down.
For one, the screws are loctited.. so be carefull.
Second thing to consider.. the speedsafe is a really strong spring that can easy fly through the room if you release it.. so disassemble the knife halfway open, where you feel the spring isn't pushing anymore. assemble the same way, with the spring in the neutral position. Usually the G-10 isn't glued, just well fitted.

also think about what you're doing, warranty and all.

First time is the hardest, after that it disassembles like that.

greetz and take care, Bart.

Thanks, I need to know that it is possible. I like the knife a lot, it fits my palm really well, but G10 - too rough. I am not certain yet, just thinkign to do this with cocobolo or better ebony, make it even thicker and more rounded - I like solid grip.
Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili - yes, it is possible to disassemble. I have taken my avalanche down several times. The G-10 is not glued to the frame. I disassembled my avalanche in the open position and did not have any trouble with the spring. However, here are some issues you may have. The spring is housed in a cut-out in the G-10 handle. You'll have to duplicate that cut-out on your new handles. Also, the cut-out is packed with grease - will that degrade the wood handles over time? Finally, the spring itself has some movement in the cut-out, particularly over time as the grease leaks and/or congeals and gets pushed to the sides (the source of the famous Speed-Safe rattle). How well will wood handles hold up to the spring? I dunno, but these are issues you'll face. Good luck, though, sounds like an excellent project. The avalanche is a great knife.

May be I should keep G10 as a bolster, or make brass bolster? Then I should probably glue the wood to frame.
Thanks, Vassili.

Geez, I just don't know. But anyway, if you're not worried about the warranty, don't worry about the disassembly. If nothing else, the SpeedSafe is an ingeniously simple mechanism well worth eyeballing.

I've taken my Boa apart some 10 times (dont get me started on why...) The screws would only be held in with a small dab of loctite, and the speed safe mechanism is just a bar that is bent when you push on the stud.

Taking a Kershaw apart doesen't void the warranty either.
Changing the handles probably would though.
