Hi everybody!

I´m thinking of getting a kershaw avalanche because it looks great, the blade steel is good, that assisted opening mecanism is really tempting and there is something in my head wispering some thing like: "... buy it... you must have one...". But, since there are lots of knife adicts in this forum, i´d like to hear their (your) opinion about this knife.

Thank you (in advance)

it's a beautiful knife
i was thinking of getting the scallion but after seeing the avalanche, that's it for me, i'm hooked
i love the assisted opening feature (and it's legal in my parts ^ ___ ^ {no automatics allowed})
and the black design really gets my rocks off ;)

I won five if that says anything!!!

I first bought one when they came out a couple years ago (or so). I also took one to hawaii with me (went there to get married) and spoke to Ken onion about the knife. I had told Ken On the phone that I had been carrying one for a long time as my edc. I told him it was a great all around utility knife. He said thats why he had designed it. I was going to get him to sign it, but unfortunately the blade of the new one I took with me was rusted in the box. This was do to the blade being sandblasted and the humid weather their did it in. However when i got home I sent it to kershaw and they replaced it with one of the new coated blades. all the new ones now have the coated blades, hince no more problems!!

It s a great knife that I would highly recommend to anyone who has a fine appreciation for good quality cutlery.

Hope this helps
oh by the way Ive found out that stropping the blade versus using a ceramic rod, conserves the edge much better (not taking too much metal off). the 440v can be hard to sharpen, but stropping it will keep from taking to much off the blade to get a good edge. when I first got one I used a ceramic rod to sharpoen it, the natural stones werent hard enough. I ended up taking off more than I wanted to. then I started using a strop to maintain the dge of the newer one, and havent used anything else in a year to sharpen it!!!

its a great knife!!! you wont be disappointed!!! ;)

I have the Avalanche as well as the left-handed versions of the mini-task and Random Task. I like them all. The Avalanche is the best hard use knife of the three. Mine was converted to left hand and has a NYPD enameled seal on it. Kind of a nice post 9-11 knife. - Lee

its a great knife, the only thing Ive had a complaint about was the pocket clip, tip of it that is, tends to stick out far. It has actually put a hole in the lining of my good wool jacket, other than that its fine. Ive thought about cutting the very tip off, or bending it, but as of yet Ive been to lazy to fix the problem.

It is though, my favorite knife of all time...and that says alot!!! ;)

This one's on my "list" ; Kershaw has that "shavin' sharp" out-of-box
sharpness. Years ago, before things like "speedsafe" and such came along
I had one of their "sabretooth" line that would give the BEST Spydie a "run for the money" DAMN GOOD KNIVES! I thought back then : If these guys ever came out with a switchblade, they'd sell a million of'em! True to form, the "Onions"
are the hottest selling item since the switch. Kershaw did a great job.
Kudos ;)

I've just got one! It's great! I can't stop playing with it!

Thank you for the advice!

I don't use mine. Reason is that I can't afford so many pants. The texture in those g-10 handles IS the roughest that I've encountered and with tight clip like in avalance pockets last one month.

Ive had that happen myself!!! the g-10 wearing holes in my jean pocket!!!...lol!!!....thats ok though I like my knife more than the jeans, gives my clothes character marks!!! :D

....you could take the clip off and sand the area underneath, and around it, if its a big concern for you!!! ;)

The clip has a plastic plug under it to reduce the pocket shredding nature of this knife .Thanks for the positive feedback on this knife. I'm glad you guys like it !!

I just got a avalanche used at a great price from another forumit. It is very well-designed and well-made. Great blade shape and handle design. BUT it has a fairly large handle for its blade, which means that it becomes more of a "working" knife than a "gent's" knife. It is sturdy and hefty. I'm going to make all sorts of mods to mine, as soon as I get the time & access to the equipment. Then it wiill ROCK.

Ken,
its good to hear from you!!! you probably dont remember, but a year and a half ago we spoke on the phone. I was going to bring you a new avalanche to sign before you went to a show (I was coming to maui to get married, and hop over to honolulu). Unfortunately before I could call you once I was there, I opened the knife to find the blade rusted. I did send it back to kershaw when i got home and they did replace the blade with the newer coated blade.

oh by the way the plug was a good idea, but it doesnt keep your jeans from getting worn out in the area its clipped to. My wife laughs when shew sees the jean pockets Ive worn from carrying it, I like to think of it as "character" marks!!

with all that said Ken, your knife should've made the top 100 legendary blade by krause publishing!!!!

kudos to you ken!!! out of all my knives (believe me thats alot!!!) yours has won my heart!~!!! (even over my handmades....oops! did I say that?....dont tell anyone!!!!)

Ive been carrying one since they came out!!! :D

...oh by the way its the g-10 rubbing with the pressure of the clip (area around it, not specifically the area under the point of pressure from the clip).

Outta ALL the "belly@$$ing" you've
seen posted here, let me tell you
you make the BEST DAMN "assisted opening" knive(s) I've seen thus far. Mark me. the Avalanche is on my
"list";) wouldn't mind a "Whirlwind"
either. GOOD WORK KEN/KERSHAW!!!

AET ;)
