So, recently I picked up an old Kershaw Avalanche from a friend of mine who was looking to get something new. Now, this friend is by no means a serious knife nut. As a matter of fact he was a guy who got sucked into buying the Avalanche (a higher dollar value Kershaw) by the gimmick of the assisted opener. He actually picked it up at the local Ace Hardware. Anyway, being that he was buying it as a user, he went ahead and tried to take the black coating off of the blade once it started to wear. Now, he sold it to me very inexpensively just to get it out the door to make room for his new knife (a Kershaw mini Cyclone). The thing is that he took off the Black coating with a dremel and a small sanding bit and he didn't get all of it off, just most of it. Plus, the sanding bit on the dremel only covered maybe a square centimeter at a time so that you have sanding marks going in different directions and the finish on the blade is just not pretty any more at all. I'll try to get some pics up of this around the end of the week for you guys to see. Now, I have exactly two things to say about this.

1. I really admire this guy. I couldn't take a knife of the materials and price of the Avalanche out and just go to town on it like that. I know a lot of you guys here wouldn't just go to town on a blade with a low grit dremel sander bit either. Crazy stuff.

2. Would it be possible to pay Kershaw to replace the blade on this knife for me. I'd really like to try to get this guy cleaned up for daily carry.

Benchmade replaces blades for $20 or $30 depending on steel. So I would imagine kershaw would. But I think you should keep the knife. I took the black coating off lots of my knives. You can put a Very beautiful hand rubbed satin finish on it. Use a dremel to get the rest of the black off, but DON"T USE THE SANDING DISKS. They are too abrasive. Use the, well I froget what they are accually called, but there are these little wheels that are different colors corisponding to their abrasiveness. They are I guess you could say fuzzy looking. I'll find the number and post it for you. But use those to get the rest of the black off and get rid of the marks he put in the blade, then go to ACE hardware or walmart and get wet/dry sandpaper and start at maybe 500 or 600 and go all the way up to 2000 if you want. You can go as shiny as you want.

The option to turn off the assisted action is nice, and the combination with G10 makes for a really quick into action grippy knife. If the Avalanche had more of a deeper index finger area to protect it from the blade, it would be perfect.
