I'll be moving to california in about 2 weeks, and recently purchased the kershaw avalanche without knowing what the "assist opening" term meant until I've recently recieved it. I really like this knife and would like to take it with me to california, but my question is, will it/ I be alright if security just so happen to search and find it in my checked luggage? Sorry if this topic has been discussed before, I've used the search option and came up with very little info regarding this topic. -Thank You

Assisted openers are legal in checked luggage, just not in carry-on. They are not auto-openers.

They are also legal in California, which by the way has some reasonable laws on knife carry.

Look here for more: www.packing.org
in the top left side "jump to state" to choose CA and look at a synopsis of CA carry laws.

How do you like the Avalanche? It's a pretty knife. Tell us about it.

I don't know anything about Cali laws, but I've been impressed with my Avalanche, although I may have to part with it soon.

Moved to knife laws from General.

knarfeng, thanks for the reply, your post and the link you've provided me really helped me out  . As for the knife, I purchased it for EDC purposes. To me, the "avalanche" really is one of the best folding knives. The fit and finish is great. The s30v steel is razor sharp, liner locking system is perfect for this knife, and the g-10 handle grips like you wouldn't believe. Overall, this knife is worth every penny I've paid for, and is no doubt the first knife (out of my crkt, spyderco) I reach for first in morning when I get dressed.
