I already have carbon steel blades that I use when I head for the outdoors but I want to find a decent but cheap stainless knife to function as a backup survival/outdoor knife to store in my vehicle or emergency bag. I have seen postings about the Kershaw Bear Hunter II and the Mora 2000 and I find both very appealing and at the price point I am looking for. I have never seen either of these knives in person so I looking for some input as to which would be a better choice? I am also uncertain as to whether the Sandvik 12C27 or the AUS-8A is a better all around stainless steel? I have AUS-8A folders but I have no experience with Sandvik 12C27 steel. I have several Moras but they are all carbon steel.

I don't know the Mora but the Bear Hunter is an amazing knife for the money. Excellent slicer, comfy handle, decent sheath. Sharp as a razor from the factory, and easy to resharpen, not that it needs it much.
Just astonishing they can make such a good knife for $25 or so.

Both knives seem to be great deals for what they are selling for. The one thing I was curious about was how 12C27 steel compared to AUS-8A. I know AUS-8A has more carbon and has vanadium which makes it an all around great stainless steel. I figured it had to better than the 12C27 but everything I read gave really high marks to the Sandvik 12C27. I spent some time today on the Sandvik website and found a wealth of information on their steel and manufacturing processes. After being educated about the differences between fine carbide and coarse carbide steel I now see that there is more to 12C27 than what meets the eye! I appreciate anymore input anyone can give me about either of these knives or anymore information about the comparison of AUS-8A to Sandvik 12C27.

I have the Sandvik in other knives and it's comparable in edge retention to AUS8. The steel is not the dealbreaker on these knives.
Personally I like the design of the Bear Hunter more, the Mora doesn't do it for me which is why I don't own one, it's an excellent knife by all account, never heard a bad thing about it.
So in my case it's the least important thing about a knife that clinched it. I don't think you can go wrong with a Mora, certainly not for that money.
And neither can you with the Kershaw.
Get 'm both! :D

The m2k is a amazing outdoor knife, sheath make a great aid for fire making also. I've beat the crap out of one for a few years and its still going strong.

I'm a Kershaw fan :), but get the Mora2000 - or one of the newer 2010 version.

Thanks Golbat for the pics. To be honest I like both the Mora 2000 and 2010 models as far as the aesthetics go. Do you find one grip better than the other? The 2010 looks more comfortable. I have clippers and they fit my hand very well. Does the 2010 handle have a similar fit as the clipper? Although I will probably make my own kydex holster do you prefer the stock holster for the 2000 or the one for the 2010?

Handle on the Mora is not as ergonomic as the 2010 or clipper, imo.

If you like clippers, you might want to look into the Mora Allround, basically an augmented stainless clipper, just as sturdy as the Mora 2000:

Just ordered a 2010-MG. Looking forward to taking it out to the woods to try it out! It seems that the 2010-MG is the same as the new Mora Bushcraft Forest. Correct me if I am wrong in that assumption. I may still eventually buy the Kershaw Bear Hunter just because it seems like a such a great deal. It will have to wait though because I plan on buying a Becker Necker first!
