My friend asked me for some knife info/ideas, for a good knife, for aroung 50-75 bucks. Ignoring the couple of BM, spyderco's, and kershaws I mentioned, they bought a kershaw black colt II. I have no experience with this knife. I, for the price, would have gone with the BM griptilian. For a little more $$ I would have gone with the G-10 tyrade. But out of curiosity, does anyone have a black colt II, and if so what are your thoughts on it?

It's a nice little USA made 3" lockback. Nothing special. Good grippy polymer.
The Black Colt II (#1045A) only MSRP's for $57.95.
Mini Grips retail for around $85-$95 I believe. (not including Ritter)
Surely your friend didn't pay that much for it. (and no, I'm not calling you Surely) ;)

At NGK the mini-grip is 56.25 and the Black colt I think was around 33. So if they wanted a knife around 50-75 buck then the mini grip would have been a great pick. Better steel, stonger blade tip, stronger lock, better handle material, pocket clip, one hand open/close. Am I missing somthing or is myfriend just out there. He said he wanted all those thing and then bought the black colt II. I dont get it and I bet he will be getting something else real soon.

While there is nothing wrong with the Black Colt II, it is one of the oldest designs of knives.
The standard lockback.
Almost (if not all) traditional lockbacks would have trouble competing
with the Grip's lock, blade steel choices etc...

While you can get S30V, a pocket clip, a drop point blade, a bazillion types of handle materials in a lockback,
it's just a completely different knife from a BM Grip.

Maybe he's comfortable with a lockback?

Just to throw another point out there, the axis lock may be iffy in some areas in terms of legality. The black colt is very simple and seems like a pretty tough knife. Nothing fancy, but that may be a plus. Though if that isn't an issue, the griptilians are great knives for the price.
