Kershaw blade dulling too fast?

Hi guys, First time poster, long time lurker. I just bought my first Kershaw, the Lahar 1750 and am not sure what to make of it. I bought this knife because my Gerber just didn't pass muster (the steel was VERY soft and wouldn't hold an edge). So, long story short: I bought the Kershaw, opened it up, was amazed by its blade and over construction, and took it hiking the next day. After one use (I was using it to strike a flint/fire starter), the edge came right of the blade. Instead of being finely sharpened and razor crisp, it's now full of micro divits and tiny portions missing from the blade. Oh, and it's dull. I've used other knives to strike a flint before and had no issues like this. Is Kershaw steel supposed to be soft, or is this "normal"?

Thanks in advance, 'cause I'm no knife guru and am looking for some expertise.

Did you strike with the spine or the edge? If you struck with the edge, it's probably going to dull. Are the chips you mentioned all over the blade or just on the portion you struck? And what are the other knives with which you have had success with?

Probably any blade will dull if you use the edge to strike firesteels.

You need to write 500 times" I will not use the knife edge on my fire steel" and after your done you may post again.

This.
Metal edge on Flint= Dull edge.
I have a hard time believing your other knives lasted through being struck with flint on the edge. You are ALWAYS suppose to use the spine of the blade. You will preserve your edge AND you will get more and hotter sparks flying.

Thanks for the info and tips - much appreciated. Now, I need to sharpen the knife back to life. Can I use a ceramic sharpener such as the Spiderco that has a 30 and 40 degree option, or do I need to stay at 22?

You should do fine using the 40 degree option.
